This seems a poor decision to me. The rider has nothing to do with monitoring tire pressure and a number of unknowns may have caused the underinflation nor does it seem that an underinflated tire would give any advantage.

There's not much information in that to indicated that he knew the tyre pressure was down or that it was deliberate or that he gained any advantage from it.

By the way, the main race was a nail-biter.

Doesn't matter if the rider knew it or not, a tech violation will disqualify.
Sounds like the crew was pushing for a low pressure and misjudged running temperature correction. He was off a very small amount.
From my old track day and racing days we ran pressures far below standard recommended, 30 psi or less. Bigger contact patch, better traction and feedback, but wears out faster.

I was thinking greater heat buildup, faster wear.
