contact tracing - avoid COVID19 - jtopiso_imp - 05-16-2020

Hi guys:

I think these links are quite informative and worth sharing:

https://ncase.me/contact-tracing/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D__UaR5MQao

Basically, they explain how it is possible to have a contact tracing app to stop Covid19 spread while also keep our privacy intact.

Regards,

JT

We have such an app in Australia. It was developed by the government which has released the code so people can be satisfied it’s not doing anything it shouldn’t. That is necessary ... but that’s not a conversation for this forum.

The one drawback with the app is Apple. iOS has it’s own set of protections against Bluetooth wing used to gather information about you or flog you advertising which means that contact tracing apps have to operate in the foreground with the screen visible. So, if you’re on a train and decide to check the CB1100 forum, you will likely stop the app working.

This is not a reason not to use it; just something to be beware of. I believe Apple’s at work on the problem.

Yes apple is working on that. It will require an OS update.

They should develop a single app at least for the whole EU, as we have no borders among us. But their reaction is being slow on this front.

I'm glad to hear that Australia has it already working. One question: are there any estimates about how many people is actually using the app?

JT, the only figure I can find quickly is from 8 May when 5.4 million people had downloaded it. Apparently that's 29% of smartphone users aged 14 and above.

[url=https://theconversation.com/in-some-places-40-of-us-may-have-downloaded-covidsafe-heres-why-the-government-should-share-what-it-knows-138323]The article I got that number from suggests that the number may be up to 40% in the larger cities.

We copied it from Singapore, I think.

Interesting. Thanks, Cormanus.

I guess that's good. I do really hope the API is well documented, so we can trust that privacy is preserved.

Now is time for governments to wake up and do proper APP development using those API's. We are already late...

The sooner it's up and running, the sooner confinement can finish without the current risk of a regrowth.

Australia has been very focussed on contact tracing since the outset of this virus. I'm sure it is one of the factors that has helped us keep cases and deaths down. Restrictions are being lifted, but there is no guarantee we won't see recurrence. I can't begin to imagine the long-term economic consequences, particularly if governments pretend we are on the way back to 'normal'.

From the pictures on the news I saw this yesterday of beaches and pools and race tracks there is no hope that there is not going to be a second wave..or an extension/spike of the first wave would be more accurate. What is with people?

I too shake my head in dismay at the actions of those people.
It's so absurd. By now, what don't they get about this deadly bug???
