It is very much a desolate road (no toads, although you do have to be on the lookout for the endangered California Desert Tortoise), I think you actually pass the "middle of no where" halfway to the base.
I spent most of the winter there in 2010.

Nice pics, love the dusk effect - very eerie looking.
