Sargent Cycle seats - Gypped_imp - 04-19-2013
Well, I was out getting the first maintenance on the bike done at the stealership (they threw in a hugely discounted prepaid maintenance plan with the CB) and after I was done I figured I'd run on over to Sargent and look around. I talked with a guy there for a while about customizing the seat (about $260ish for what I want done). Apparently since it's the beginning of the season, they're crazy busy. Locally, it's a 3 week wait, so god help you if you ship a seat in now.
I did ask if they had any plans on making a seat for the CB, but as far as he was aware they weren't even considering it yet. He said they have to get at least a couple hundred requests before it even hits their radar.
If anyone is considering them, just to have driver portion of the seat changed (raised/lowered, new foam added, and their default covering), it'd be about $170-180ish iirc. I don't know how that compares to other places, but it's there for comparison at least. I was looking at getting the pillion changed a bit so she'd be a bit comfortable... and would stop sliding forward when I slow down or brake at all. She has a tendency to slam her helmet into mine.

Thanks for the info, Gypped. I will be contacting Sargent as soon as I determine exactly how I want my seat modified.
I definitely need to have the seat raised a bit, even an inch or so because I'm still having difficulty riding the 1100 with my yet-unrepaired left knee.
It will be much easier to raise the seat height than to lower the pegs.
Because I have no health insurance, the knee surgery will be an out-of-pocket expense. I still owe approx $900 on the repair of my right knee; got to get that one paid off before I deal with the left one.
As it is right now, I'm only good for about 20 minutes riding time before I have to get my leg off the left peg. I have found out that I can actually rest my shin on the rider peg to relieve the pain (I wear Sidi boots) but that is no way to ride! I enjoy riding with the balls of my feet on the pegs but only my right leg can handle that at this point. I'm planning to be financially ready for surgery by the end of June.

A cheaper alternative to Sargent or Corbin is Spencer (http://greatdaytoride.com/Home_Page.php). He'll modify your seat to your specifications for less $75 - $85 plus shipping there and back. Worth a look.

I emailed spencer and he said he'd never done a cb1100 seat. I told him it is rock hard, so I wanted the seat softened and lowered one inch. He said he didn't feel comfortable doing it. If anyone has any work done on the stock seat and is satisfied with the feel and price, let me know. I'm very disappointed in the firmness of the stock seat.

Jim in the meantime you might try a gel pad. My brother has one on his bonneville. Raises his seat height 3/4" I think and the gel is easier on his rear than the stock Bonnie board plank. Just clips on. The edge of the seat.

I'm surprised you think the stock seat is rock hard. I think it's too soft and squishy -- but then again, I like Corbin seats which really are hard. I don't think I'm going to get along too well with the stock seat, so I might go aftermarket once Corbin or Sargent comes out with something. Not sure about Sargent, but I'm pretty confident Corbin will come out with one.

I'm with you, the seat is too soft. I'm not a fan of corbin seats but this is the softest bike seat I've ever been on - and not in a good way.
I also would like it to be about an inch or two taller.

I'm okay with the seat height -- you may be taller than I am -- but don't really like anything else about the stock seat, other than it's looks. It does look good. However, the soft foam makes it just feel shapeless and unsupportive under my rump. I think the biggest problem for me might just be that it seems to want to roll my hips forward which I can feel after 15 minutes on the bike, which then becomes hip and back pain.
