Tire time again - ohiorider_imp - 06-24-2019
The CB1100 is just a few miles shy of 8000 miles. I've already replaced the front with the same model and size Bridgestone that came on the bike, at 5640 miles last August.
Just ordered a new one for the rear which should be at the shop in a few days. The rear made it to 8000 miles. It was ok for bombing around here when the roads were dry, but didn't have much life left.
For once, I didn't go for another brand or larger rear tire. I like the way the bike handles on the Bridgestones. Went with the BT54R in 140/70 R18
I'm thinking the front tire wore out quickly because the Honda isn't exactly a lightweight, and she has a bunch of brake on the front end.
Years ago, I recall that most of the Beemers I rode would generally wear out two rear tires for every front tire. Recent bikes have typically worn out both front and rear tires at approximately the same mileage.
This is the first time I've had to replace a front tire long before the rear needed replacing.

I usually eat through my fronts before my rears, especially on my Telelever BMW's. The CB's front BT-54 has shallow sipes, so it tends to wear relatively quickly, but like you, that's the tire I keep using on the bike. They work fine for me.

That had also been my experience in the past. I'd usually get a few thousand miles more out of a front tire than the rear. The BT-54 that came on my CB1100 was the first front tire that I wore out long before the rear (6K miles front, 10K miles rear).
I think it's just the thin tread that Bridgestone uses on that tire. When I switched to the Michelin PR3s, tire wear went back to what I would expect (12.5K front, 10K rear).

I run Avon 26s on my Bonneville, m-in-sc. They're fine and hold up well, but, if you ride on grooved concrete roadways, they tend to want to follow the grooves. Just a slight twitch in the bars now and then. Might just be how they ride on the Triumph, but the CB isn't too different.
Not the tire I'll choose for the CB when it needs new rubber.

With the stock Dunlops the front tread is 1/2 the rear when new. So guess which wears out first? Plus the Dunlop front cups pretty fast. Don’t know about the Bridgestones
I just today picked up a set of Perelli Angel GTs. There are others here running them too.

I have them on my Bonneville and CB. I wouldn't put any other tire on either. They are reliable, I know how they are going to react, and I get waaay better mileage than the stock Bridgestones that were on it. Chewed through the front stock tire very quickly with mountain use.

There was a thread on this subject a while back regarding the "good enough" front tire with the less than normal tread depth.
My front wore out very quickly because of the reduced tread depth and it wouldn't pass our vehicle inspection.
I was a bit stunned at how quickly it wore down to the wear bars. I think it was ferret who clued me in on the thin front tire that came from the factory.
The rear tire is still going strong and has lots of meat on it.
