Gas Tank Knee Pads - the_undecider_imp - 07-23-2014

The tanks on these are beautiful, but I have some concern for how the paint will hold up to my textile riding pants flapping around against the sides of the tank. I thought about clear 3M film, but I haven't been too good at installing that stuff with creating flaws. So, I thought some retro rubber pads might be in order.

I ordered some online and originally intended to put the longest side of the pad parallel to the bottom on the tank. With the way the tank steps down at the back, it just didn't look quite right. After staring at it for a minute, I turned the pad so it was standing up and like that much better. Also, it actually catches my knee in this orientation. I haven't applied the adhesive tape yet since a I am still playing with the exact position, but this is the basic look. Thoughts, comments, criticisms, or opinions?

I dunno. I'm so accustomed to seeing these flat side down. I'd love to see it turned 90 degrees, clockwise and pull back a couple of inches. Ignoring the step down and leaving the flat side lined up with the flat side of the forward portion of the tank.

And then, same thing, but swapping left for right.

Like this?:

It also looks good in vertical orientation at the back of the tank, though less functional given my long legs:

Hmm...I have very long legs(33")and my legs do not go that far up on the tank, they do how ever, almost touch the valve covers.

Alright, I did it! Front of the tank as originally planned.

I kinda like it in the first (horizontal) orientation. More traditional look.

But, to paraphrase our old mate Hoges: "That's not a sidepad, THIS is a sidepad".

Cheers.

I agree the horizontal orientation is more traditional and was my first intention when I ordered these. Once I got them, I just couldn't get it to look right that way. I think it is the contours on the aft portion of the tank that didn't work with these pads. I think had they been a little shorter in the horizontal dimension, it would have worked. Given my legs are so long, my knees catch the bottom of the pads.

On your Triumph, the pads are pretty much the same shape as the tank, so they were designed for the bike. I felt like my tank pads would look like I just slapped them on had I oriented them horizontally. Though different, I like them vertically.

Any chance of seeing the entire Triumph? I like the little bit I see.

Wow - great idea. I also played around with my gas tank knee pads before applying them, but I never tried it this (vertical) way. Especially with your pads it looks good.
I have applied other pads to my gas tank, but I have seen your pads but forgot where... Sad Could you please help me...?
