Been a busy week! We've been at a medical trade show in Anaheim to promote our delivery service. In a sea of companies that make all manner of medical devices, testing equipment and a lot of stuff I have no idea what it does, we are definitely the odd ducks here. We certainly are getting a lot of attention.
I've been going to automotive shows - mainly SEMA and the Performance Racing Industry show - for the past 30 years. This is a completely different world. Since COVID, the bigger automotive companies, mainly the OEMs like Ford, GM and Chrysler, have pulled out of the industry shows as they've beefed up their online and social media presence for not only new cars but also parts and accessories. Many of the independent aftermarket companies have been sucked into private equity conglomerates. The companies who still attend have pared back the glitz and glamour of the pre-2008 recession craziness like booth models, celebrities, etc, and have presented more basic displays. The shows have kept prices to buy booths fairly low to attract exhibitors and keep the booth count up.
These challenges apparently haven't affected the medical market. Huge displays with companies offering cappuccinos, people wearing suits... this is a different world for me. We're sort of like an attraction with our big yellow BMW and flashing lights. I was floored when the boss told me our 10'x10' booth cost $8k. The carpet would have been $650 alone, so he grabbed a patio mat from Amazon, which works perfectly fine. It's all-hands-on-deck. The first two riders I trained have merged into being our sales guys, and they're walking the show drumming up business. The boss and I are manning the booth, and getting all kinds of questions.
"So, you prepare and sell the bikes to make medical deliveries?" Ok, that might be a new side-business for us... no reason we can't do it, right?
Guys from other countries, particularly Central and South America have taken great interest and have said "This would be very handy where we are". Boss asks me if I'd like to start a new branch in Ecuador...
Since the convention center is ten minutes from me, I've been rolling in early on my Bonneville to fire up the booth and answer questions. The convention center is across the street from Disneyland, so it's handy to be able to slice through the tourist traffic to get to the show. The rest of the crew is coming from L.A., so they get there when they get there. I have my newly-trained riders handling morning deliveries, and I've been leaving the show to take the late afternoon runs, so it's been a long couple of days. And here I thought I was done with trade shows retiring from the automotive world!
Edit: looking at the picture, realized that the yellow strobes on the bike are reflecting off of my new Indie Ridge boots. I’m not wearing yellow shoes.

Day 182 ... Thursday Men's Group Lunch Day with a couple guests. My 2 grandsons ages 13 and 11 joined the men for cheeseburgers and fries at Steak and Shake, and a ride out to the Pink Pig for dessert. The boys said they had a blast. 85 country curvy miles @ 84 degrees and partly sunny on Blue Bird. Bonus went over 5,000 miles on the odometer on Blue Bird on today's ride.

Today, I visited my former boss, who is an ex-US Marine and clocked 200 miles.
On the way back, the odometer hit the 11,000 km mark since last August.

Just about as nice a day as one could wish for to ride. My friend on his KTM 500 exc and I was on my KLX.

While I was at the show this morning, we got a call from our main client to make a pickup at a new location. I was in the best position to grab it and the boss prefers that I make the first contact with a new clinic, so I dashed home to grab the work bike and got on the road.
Wasn’t too far-flung a destination, so I was done in the early afternoon. My friend who’s been storing my Enfield works from home when he’s not traveling. Swung by with the Triumph and swapped it in his garage for my long-lost Interceptor that had been parked there since mid March.
She was covered on a tender, so she was clean and fired right up. This is a weird known issue with this bike, for some reason after sitting for so long, the rear brake was completely non-functional. The pedal went straight down with no braking at all. Got her home and bled the rear and it’s fine now. Strange…
I can’t thank my friend enough for offering free storage until we get enough business to open a shop that isn’t the boss’ garage and mine.
It will be nice to zip around on the Enfield. I’ve missed her!

Friday night, jumped on the Interceptor and zipped down to Old World in Huntington Beach. This place is fashioned after an old German village, and has a bunch of small shops, a German restaurant and beer hall, and a small outdoor/indoor concert venue that serves pretzels and beer. My Dad brought me to this place when I was a kid (so he could drink beer), and I still like going to see local bands. It's officially Pretzel Fest at Old World, and a cool 80s tribute band called Living in Stereo was playing (oddly they didn't play the Cars song that they named the band after). I hadn't had a pretzel yet during this Fest and Mrs. is out of town for work, so I met my friend there. The Orange County Fair is also going on nearby, and Friday evening brought a ton of fair traffic. The Interceptor is great for zipping through traffic. I can't help but ride it like a hooligan bike. When the Weiner Dog Races come in a few weeks, I'll have to ride back!
Music heard, pretzel consumed, but beer was passed on. I had just a slight remaining headache from an "experimental cocktail" that Mrs. had me test the night before, and the day's delivery riding had rendered an all-time (so far anyway) 109 degrees. Plus, I had an early Saturday morning tour at the museum and wanted to be fresh.
Speaking of the museum, this was pretty random and fortuitous. I was rotating the Enfield into my previous 60-mile commute at the job I left in early March. Right about the time that job started and with tariffs on Indian goods looming, I grabbed an OEM Enfield Touring Seat off of eBay India to make the ride more comfortable. Also snagged some snazzy slip-on mufflers and some common replacement parts like clutch cables, etc. The seat was what I called the "loaf of bread" style, which Pdedse will recognize, as that was the seat he had on his Interceptor. Comfy and thick, adding over an inch to the height of my existing seat, and narrow down its full length, like a black vinyl loaf of French bread. While my posterior appreciated all of that extra cushion, the rest of my 5'8" body was now hunched forward on the taller seat. I'm sure Pdedse, who is much taller than me, appreciated that.
A different style OEM touring seat, that wasn't as tall, came up in my FB Marketplace suggestions. The location looked like it was just a few blocks from the museum, so on a whim, I messaged the seller with a picture of my seat and asked if he'd be interested in trading seats. It turned out that he wanted to sell his to buy the style I had. Great! We met up and traded seats, and I think I'll like this one. It widens up quite a bit after the front rider area, which looks interesting, and has lots of neato top stitching.
And, while I was riding in 109 temps on Friday (that was the hottest spot in the Jurupa Valley area of Riverside - it managed to get down to 103 for most of the rest of the ride), the "It was bound to happen"... happened. I got a warning light on the dash for a low tire, triggered by one of the TPMS sensors. Not uncommon, as some of the bikes have old sensors with dying batteries, and we'll switch them out as needed when we replace tires. But rather than a solid triangle, this one was red and flashing. OK, got my attention enough to pull off of the freeway just to take a look. And, found a nail in the back tire that had just been replaced two weeks ago. Ugh.
Had to stop for air a few times to get home from my runs, and while it was a small nail, the loss was increasing rapidly. Luckily, the single-side swingarm makes rear wheel removal easy, as long as you pull the muffler first to make some room. New tire in place, and hopefully we can go without another nail for a while...

Ah...unfortunate about the tire, but at least your sensor lets you know of the situation. I got a flat on my DR650 last week after being in the depths of the forest for 3 hours...but said flat didn't fully show till the next morning. It's my 4th flat with the DR in 4 years of owning the bike, this after having only 1 in the previous 15 years.
That INT650 seat does look familiar. I found it much better than the stock one. Good to see you back on the RE!
