RE: Cold Weather Riding - Gone in 60 - 01-23-2026

This post was a good reminder - I just ordered the grip warmers Pdedse referenced a while back. I wired 12v to the cockpit area on Superbird with the intention of adding warmers for our "cold mornings".

I hope they work for you!  I would think that they will take the edge off for your California riding just fine.  That's what they do for me in the 45-50 degree weather and I use the blue (middle of 3) settings.  My hands will get hot and I'll have to turn it down to green.  Dec / Jan temps are usually 32-40 and I use the hottest, red setting.  And they help, but they don't keep my hands toasty warm, they just make riding more pleasant, and I don't have numb hands after a 1-2 hour ride.  This last week, at 32-40 degrees, but with cold strong winds the wind chill has been below freezing, around 22-25.  This is when they lose their overall effectiveness.  They still make an hour ride more comfortable, but the cold will eventually win out if I ride more than an hour in such conditions.  Still, for around $30, not a bad way to go.  This is my 3rd winter with them and I haven't noticed any loss of heat.

Today at night -24*C/-12F....brrrrrr
I know, our Ferret is a winter champion! Cool

Ugh, I don't miss those extreme lows!

We usually get some snow in Gresham, Oregon, but a big NADA this winter, not even close really.  It still could, but it's made for more than usual riding days and I've been able to ride to work the last 2 weeks.  Our "east winds" coming out of the Columbia Gorge can be challenging.  I stay in the forests where the wind doesn't bother so much.

RE: Cold Weather Riding - the Ferret - 01-23-2026

Lowest so far this year for me has been 7f above, but we might get down to zero next Tuesday. If the roads are clear, I'll ride, but if we get the snow they say we're going to get starting tomorrow, it'll be a week or more before the roads will be fit to ride on. My personal cold riding record is -9f.

Guy from Mn just turned in a -22f in the ST-Owners Cold Ride Contest this morning that I've been playing for a the last 15 years. Coldest I remember seeing turned in was a -25 by a guy from ND maybe 6 or 7 years ago.

I can attest to the temp in Minnesota today. Its a nice and sunny -26f, with the feels like being a tight nutsack!
Me and my CB will be enjoying a woodstove fire in the shop tonight after work, trying to drink my beer quick enough before it freezes.

It was a balmy 21 degrees and sunny for today's 32-mile ride. Might be the last one for a little while. They are calling for a bunch of snow starting tomorrow morning, and arctic lows with a zero temp Tuesday morning. If we get the snow they are calling for, the roads won't be clear enough to ride for a few days at a minimum, especially our private road. I've been stuck in for a couple weeks after a bad snowstorm before. You can tell they are serious about this winter storm...first time brining the roads in my area this year (those white stripes in the pic below that I took on today's ride). The salt/organic beet juice brine is sprayed on the roads and is supposed to prevent the snow from sticking.

^^ This ^^ looks like nice autumn or an early spring..
For the US, bad winter storm from Texas to Boston with a lot of snow and low temp, possibble some hydro lines down..  Huh

RE: Cold Weather Riding - rdprdp01 - 01-23-2026

Sad but true. Today, it was 700 Fahrenheit (210 Celsius) at my farm in Texas. Tomorrow, the forecast is 70 Fahrenheit (-140 Celsius). The horses will be wearing "blankeys" tomorrow. Hilarious

There's a heatwave warning current for bits of SE Australia with promised temperatures in the high 30s to mid 40s.

RE: Cold Weather Riding - the Ferret - 01-24-2026

Day 22 ... they are predicting 8-11" of snow starting at 2:00 PM, so I was on the road at 10 AM .... 31 miles @ 9 degrees and cloudy

We are going to have zero to 8 degree lows and below freezing highs for the next 7 days. Brrrr Unusual for us

RE: Cold Weather Riding - pdedse - 01-24-2026

Got to feel good that you got a ride in before all the snow arrives. You're having unusual cold and we're having an unusually long dry spell with lots of sunshine. Still nippy at 30-to low 40s, but not crazy cold like you got.
