Put an A next to the ABS model. Glad we can put the mystery to rest and brought some interest to something besides yhe weight of oil we should use.

The next question is whether I should try to identify ABS models in the registry so duplicate North American VINs are explicable. I'm not sure it's really an issue now we understand how it can happen.

I don't think it'll be an issue. The same can happen with the 2014s as the 8th digit will be different for Std. (SC651) vs DLX (SC658). As long as the poster also states the type in the post, it should be obvious.

Yep. You and Daley did well protecting us from oil for a bit.

The DLXs are already shown separately in [url=https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AlRYSET40JT7dGtUV3VLTURNeFlhRXZiREdoaUNrWWc&gid=0]the registry.

At the time all this was being discussed, I said I'd found an explanation of the model codes in positions 4-8 of the VIN. I just found it again [url=http://www.vsource.org/VFR-RVF_files/BHondaModelNumbers.htm]here.

If this is right, 'S' means a capacity of more than 900 cc and 'C' means it's a street bike. There is no explanation of where 65 comes from.

That is correct. Big Honda street bikes are SC , mid size (like my CB750) are RC and so on... The 65 is just the next sequential model number that was available when the bike was designed.

Somewhere on the 'net I've seen a web page that lists all Hondas by model number. You can see from that the numeric model number gets higher as the years go by. Not sure what Honda is going to do when they finally reach "99".

Edit : Here's the page I was talking about. It's on the same web site. [url=http://www.vsource.org/VFR-RVF_files/BHondaPCNs.htm]http://www.vsource.org/VFR-RVF_files/BHondaPCNs.htm

Looks like the SCs are up to number 74 (CTX1300AE) and the RCs are up to number 83 (CB/CBR650F).

Thanks Flyn. I'd seen that page in my travels sometime ago and could never find it again.

The additional information is very helpful.
