RE: Rough ride and night last night. - redbirds_imp - 01-28-2017 After multiple episodes with kidney stones the only thing my doctor suggested was a water softener. Not a single recurrence since. I tank up daily on tea, coffee with lots of artificial sweetener, salt all my food to taste and eat anything I want except egg plant which I detest with the same vigor that ferret detests onions. Life is short, eat what you like and always have dessert first. RE: Rough ride and night last night. - rboe - 01-28-2017 Each of us have a slightly different body chemistry so to toss a huge blanket over all those foods is a bit much (I'm saying this while I have not had kidney stones myself so it's easier for me ). If told that I'd say "well what is worth living for?". That just cut out most Mexican food - especially salsa. And many of those foods you need to prevent other bad stuff from happening! My gawd! You'll have to experiment. RE: Rough ride and night last night. - ClassicVW_imp - 01-29-2017 Mickey, did the doctors have your stone(s) analyzed? That's the only way to find out what to avoid. Mine were made up of so many things, that all they could say was more more water or beer, and give up soda. RE: Rough ride and night last night. - the Ferret - 01-29-2017 No Geoorge, none of us actually saw it. They never had me catch it, I just went in a bed pan. There was a small black object in the pan after I went, but a nurse said she didn't think that was it. I have gone to the bathroom 100 times since so I guess things are ok and it passed somewhere along the line. Rboe..I know right, half the things they tell you not to eat are 1/2 the things they tell you TO eat to prevent something else. You need some red meat, fruits, vegetables and dairy. I also don't drink alcohol)" The problem with that line of thinking is there's no guarantee that every event is just pain and then you pass the stone. That's not what happens in real life. A LOT of people can't pass the stones without surgical intervention of one kind or another. Some have stents inserted, removed, and inserted for months at a time. Sometimes they have to surgically go up there and actually grab the stone and pull it out. Very uncomfortable. And even if you don't have any symptoms or pain, your body can be making stones and they're not an issue or painful until they move out of the kidney and get stuck somewhere and then you can have many stones at once. RE: Rough ride and night last night. - 4 Paws_imp - 01-29-2017 Had kidney stones once and that was enough for me! Changed my habits immediately, I now drink water at every meal and in between, wake up at night and have a glass too. Ignore soda, coffee, and tea. Took a while to stop missing them but nowadays when I backslide the thrill is gone. Guys at work convinced me not to try and ride home when symptoms initially occurred, they were more intelligent than me. RE: Rough ride and night last night. - MM300_imp - 01-29-2017 ferret, welcome to the Kidney Stone club. An organization that nobody wants to be in, and once you're in it you so wish you weren't. ![]() I had this three years ago and I attribute it directly to an increase in tea drinking. It was the day from he**. The pain started in the am. in the groin area, which was unusual but not too bad. Then it subsided. Later that day it hit me with a vengeance. I felt like I had to pee but couldn't. And it got worse, and worse and worse until I thought my left side was going to explode. I was in agony and I didn't know what it was. I went to the emergency room and was barely able to explain it to the intake nurse. They knew what it was though. Confirmed with an MRI. They gave me a Flomax pill and a prescription for some kind of pain killer (did not fill it). Once they told me what it was and the Flomax kicked in I could pee, which was a huge relief. Knowing what it was and being able to go, I figured I could deal with any residual pain. They sent me home with a few of those mesh cones that you pee into to catch the stones. Wouldn't you know, about three days later I passed about 6 of those little bastids. I've been on the water hard ever since because I am not going through that again. RE: Rough ride and night last night. - Flowpez_imp - 01-30-2017 Does not sound fun. RE: Rough ride and night last night. - Allen K_imp - 01-30-2017 I've never suffered with kidney stones. So I can't know what those of you have gone through, but you definitely have my sympathy. After hearing all of your descriptions, I wouldn't even wish it on an ex-wife. But I've been doing the water and apple cider vinegar for years. Water torture, I call it, isn't much fun at first. But you do adjust and actually get to the point where you miss it if you cut back on drinking it. The rule I heard somewhere is to drink half your weight in ounces of water ( if you're 200lbs; drink 100ozs. of water). I started on the apple cider vinegar to help with an acid reflux problem. I used to live on Maalox and Pepcid AC. At the time I wasn't aware of all the other supposed benefits of apple cider vinegar. You can mix a couple of table spoons of the vinegar with Raspberry/Cranberry juice or apple juice and it tastes much better. Also, I'm told, you have to get the apple cider vinegar that has " The Mother". I don't even know what that is. But it seems to work. Hope this helps. Ferret - Glad to hear you're feeling better. I had a brief episode about 15 years ago (age ~ 50). Woke up in pain, but fully functional by afternoon. Dodged the bullet on that one. Recommended diet and kidney stones sure is confusing. Being a coffee and ice tea addict, I searched for coffee/tea & kidney stones and found lots of conflicting information. The majority of recent research seemed to indicate that coffee/tea (regular & decaf), as well as wine & beer, reduced the incidence of kidney stones. The bad actors were sodas, apple juice and grapefruit juice. Bottom line: who knows? but maybe you can maintain you're tea addiction. BTW - onions are highly recommended.
