RE: Fuel Reserve?? - Django - 11-15-2015

I happened to run out of fuel yesterday. Well, not on purpose. Confused

I went out for a Sunday afternoon ride in really bright weather conditions. When I left home, I saw, that there was not much fuel left and I should stop for refueling the next 25 km.

Well then I was underway and enjoyed riding so much, that I completely forget to refuel.

Somewhere in the back country all of the sudden the engine stopped working, just as if I had pressed the kill switch. There had been no warning at all before. At first reaction I thought, it was an electrical problem or so. But then it came to my mind, that I just had forgotten to refuel.

Looking at my Garmin gps, I figured out, next gas station was about 3 km away. Luckily I could ask another rider, who just stopped nearby, to get me some fuel from the gas station. That kind soul helped me out by bringing a can of about 3 liter and I could ride to the gas station to fill up completely.

Ok, here are the numbers:

It took exactly 250 km for my 2013 to empty the fuel tank completely. I refilled 14.5 liter.

I think, my last run out of fuel was about 30 years ago. Rolleyes

LOL you know you are having a good ride when you forget about fuel and just run it out. I am surprised you weren't annoyed by the flashing bar on the dash. Once I looked down and saw that I couldn't ignore it.

250 KM is 155 miles
14.5 liters is 3.83 US gallons
30 years is a long time... lol

Django, I'm sorry that happened to you. What a nuisance. But, there's always a bright side, and it's this: I've always thought the best I could get from my 2011 14.6 litre petrol tank was 250 kms. I was RIGHT!!!! Clap

Django mentioned that it was a bright day. I can relate. The only time I ever ran a bike out of gas was last year on my CB11. I realized that on a bright sunny day, the only thing I could see in the '13's LCD display was the reflection of my helmet. Unless you move your head to a different angle, it's not readily apparent that the bar is flashing.

I nearly ran it out on the way to work the other day. Left the house with 150 miles showing on the trip meter and planned to stop at a station about 10 miles down the road. After stopping to feed horses, I completely forgot and went on to work.

I had one warning taking the sharp 20 mph curve of the last of ramp to work. The bike began to sputter while leaning in the corner. Luckily there is a Costco at that exit. It took 3.9 gallons to fill up and I had 175 miles on the trip meter (45 mpg). Looks like my mileage has dropped a bit in the cold, wet weather.

Yeah kennyw, that's the same pattern as it happend to me.

And as Flynrider wrote, the flashing (I'd say blinking) bar is really low-key at the 13's display. My Beemer had a big red light for this state.

But then, I knew about it, forgot it while riding, found somebody, who saved my day and as a result can report numbers -- everything's fine. Thumbs Up

So is it fair to say, once the light blinks, we still have (at least) a gallon left?

RE: Fuel Reserve?? - the Ferret - 11-18-2015

close.. 9/10 gal I think..at least 40 miles for some..maybe 55 for me Big Grin

Well, I think, you ride a 2014. That's different, it has more fuel capacity.

For the 2013, I'd say, when it starts blinking, about 0.9 US gallons or 3.5 liter are left.

Mine usually starts flashing with about 1.3 gallons left in the tank. Not sure why.
