Isn't there some type of sensor that detects low oil level? Perhaps triggering the oil pressure sensor. And if the warning light turns on, I would think there is still some oil to ride safely until topping off (soon after), correct?
I really should just check the oil level once in a while, but just wondering.

Just the EOP sensor. Engine oil pressure. There is no oil level sensor. There is also an EOT sensor--Engine oil sensor.
If you ever see the oil light come on, I would HIGHLY suggest that you IMMEDIATELY hit the kill switch and pull over (safely of course).

Thanks for clarifying. You would think if the engine oil light comes on you would still be safe to ride for a little bit without hurting the motor. Sort of like the gas light, it's not like the light goes on when the tank is completely empty.

Well, you don't know why the light comes on. Could be full of oil, but the pump failed. You just don't know, and engine damage or seizure will happen pretty rapidly. They just don't run well without oil.
If the oil temp light comes on I would stop too. Overheated engines can blow head gaskets and more bad things I'm not as familiar with. Maybe crack a head.

That's right...other things (possibly more catastrophic) may trigger the light besides low oil. (duhhh... sorry it's been a long day..)

Most of those low oil preassure lights seem to have a crazy low threshold -- like 3-5 PSI, which is basically at the point where if you see it you're already dead. Definetely better to be proactive about oil level.

I find it strangely comforting that I'll apparently never see the oil pressure light.

I don't think I ever saw a bike with that light on in 17 years in the industry and certainly not since. Can't say it has never happened but my goodness it would certainly be a real rarity.
