900 Kaws lasted until 76 ( called Z-1's from 72-75 but name changed in 76 to KZ900) in 77 they were upgraded to 1000's. I bought the first KZ-1000 to come in to the dealership in late 76. My wfe and I had been married 2 years by then. She's still my pillion.
Your 74 timeline was probably correct.

yea we didn't worry much about consequences much back then. I had already ridden on the street for 11 years by then, and this was typical gear when it was warm. lol
Now a lot of the time I look like a Hi Viz astronaut, hot or cold.

In my foolish 20s, the decade of decadence as my friends and I called it, I dressed like that. Parties usually involved a 24 of beer strapped to the rear seat.
After the party there as nothing like making a lot of noise racing around town with your drunken buddies at 3AM when the only other vehicles on the road were taxis, ambulances and police cars. How did we ever survive?
Now I spend half of my 6 month riding season dressed is 3 layers of clothing. Wimp!

Sam Brocato, a co-worker at Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (1970-1979) had a Z-1 RT 1,000 cc. He significantly increased the turbo boast and reported 147 MPH, but I do not recall if that was top end or 1/4 mile speed.
