Not necessarily Cormanus, but there’s an old saying in the US, “you can’t fight city hall”...meaning it’s hard to take on the government in court or wherever. In most places, if you’re involved in an accident with a public transportation vehicle (i.e. a bus or streetcar etc), it seems it’s tough to get a court ruling in your favor.

Tort Claims Acts and Governmental Liability
The United States government has implemented the Federal Tort Claims Act that allows a waiver for immunity when the government may be liable for damages to someone injured by a government employee or entity.

But wouldn't the mail vehicle bear some civil responsibility for causing the accident? Although as I'm typing this I realize it would be a tough fight in court. Both proving it and also they are probably considered something like emergency vehicles in that it is your responsibility to avoid them.

"The United States has waived sovereign immunity to a limited extent, mainly through the Federal Tort Claims Act, which waives the immunity if a tortious act of a federal employee causes damage..."

But proving it would be *very* difficult, whether or not they be considered emergency vehicles. The OP just "lost control for unknown reasons".
I would be very interested to see how this plays out...
