RE: Cut Down NS EX Shield - rboe - 02-03-2014 Ya, it takes some fiddlin' RE: Cut Down NS EX Shield - the Ferret - 03-14-2014 Gingersdaddy...just wondering if you ever came to a resolution? I'm thinking of trying maybe another inch off. I still have some wind noise, when I stand up off the seat a little it seems to get better. Wind seems to catching me at the chin right now. Another issue, I was riding today with a different pair of shoes and when I'd take off smoothly and up shift, when I shifted to 5th it popped out, back into fourth, I shifted back up and it was fine. It did this three times, I'm hoping it was just me no shifting hard enough. I started shifting it a little harder to make sure it was all the way into gear. I wonder if anyone else has had this happen.
RE: Cut Down NS EX Shield - the Ferret - 03-15-2014 Motorcycle transmissions always like positive shifts so don't be lazy with your shift. Changing from boots to a smaller profile or softer shoes can have an effect on how positive the shift is. Try another ride with your normal shoes and see if it still happens. Yeah, I think it was just a different set of boots. RE: Cut Down NS EX Shield - dBuster_imp - 03-16-2014 Ferret, did you ever cut your shield down? I am about to pull the pin and get a street shield ex I believe. but to hear how some had to cut so much of makes me almost want to just get a smaller screen. But the for point mounting must be more stable in theory... I am 6'1" at my best height, and would rely like to have a smooth ride with my modular helmet on. Wish there was like wind tunnel results to look at. Best angle etc... Sent from my XT1055 using Tapatalk RE: Cut Down NS EX Shield - the Ferret - 03-16-2014 dBuster...no I never cut mine down. I only used it on the one trip last year, and although there was noise and buffeting, it wasn't something I couldn't live with for a one week trip and I appreciated the protection on the freeway portion of that trip. Will be interesting to see how it fits the 14 Deluxe which has a 1" higher headlight. Truth is though 99% of the time, I ride the bike without any shield at all, and prefer it that way. I hear what you are saying though, it seems crazy to buy a big shield and cut 1/3 or more of it off. I guess it depends on what you are willing to tolerate from a wind/ buffeting/ noise standpoint, and the only way to tell is to start large and modify a little at a time until you are satisfied. RE: Cut Down NS EX Shield - dBuster_imp - 03-16-2014 I normally ride the bike and my other bike without a shield also but this year I will be on the road more often with the American Legion Riders and going to rides and events. If it helps to keep me from feeling like I am going to be blown off of the bike I will put up with some noise.. It will be doing it's job. I took 4 1/4 inches off the top of the shield. Basically mirroring CIP's first cut attempt. with the dlx headlight sitting 1 in higher than my 13, I probably should have taken more off but it looked like I was cutting a bunch off. It looks good, but I am measuring 13 1/4 inches from ign to top of shield. Most members who have cut shields have been happiest at 8 to 10" above ign. Saturday I may get a chance for a ride and will see how it goes. Gosh I'd hate to have to take off another 3". tomorrow I will take some pics and post up. RE: Cut Down NS EX Shield - Dakota_imp - 01-13-2015 My ears ring after a ride even if wearing ear plugs. Did NS do any testing of this shield or did they just pick the closest standard shield off the shelf that would fit? Seems like NS should use this feedback to improve their design. |
