Realistically, the Grom is just a toy...modern day, street legal monkey bike. You also have to spend about a grand extra to make the suspension handle a 200 lb rider. Then, you are limited to a top speed of around 60 mph and a bike not legal for the freeway.
The KLR is a jack of all trades bike and it is comfortable for day long rides and allows you to go anywhere. I had a 1991 KLR and I still regret selling it. I would enjoy a new one, but don't want to pay new money for one when I know I could find a nice used one with farkles for $3k.
I fully realize that my lack of patience and a propensity for being impulsive often lead me astray. I found a 2009 Kawasaki KLX250SF for a price that makes it hard to pass up. I almost took it home yesterday, but I wanted to sleep on it. After doing so, I still want it. I figured that I can get my money back out of the bike if I decide it isn't right. It'll run fast enough for short runs on the highway and can handle a dirt road. It's also a ton of fun to hoon the snot out of a low powered bike without much worry of breaking the speed limit. Everybody needs a hooligan bike, right?
Hoon the snot out of it, I love it! Wish I could say that! I'm demonised for making any jokes on here that don't 'comply'. Recently I got admonished for laughing at a 'fart joke' all of which were mysteriously deleted by Ferret. I am on the brink of giving up on the dual standards of this so called 'forum'. Tortuga there are no dual standards on this forum. I don't allow anyone to use foul language or make inane 4th grade bathroom humor or sexual innuendo jokes, like your juvenile masturbation innuendo that I recently deleted. If I see it, and it doesn't fit our standards, I edit it, or delete it, no matter who types it. That is the way it has always been, long before you joined the forum. Everyone else understands that. All you have ever been asked to do is to abide by the same forum decorum as everyone else. It was what you were asked to do six months ago, and it is what you were asked to do recently by private pm. For some reason, you don't think you should have to abide by the decorum every one else abides by. At this point I encourage you to give up on us, because quite frankly unless Guth tells me otherwise, I will keep moderating as instructed, and I am tired of you constantly testing us and pushing against what we have set up here. This is Guth's house. He owns this website. He says how he wants things in his house. He asked me to enforce the decorum he has set forth, and I do that to the best of my ability. If you are not in agreement then by all means, please go find another forum that you don't think is a "bloody joke".

Well, I pulled the trigger! It's perfect for the shorter rides I like to do when I just have an hour or two to kill. I won't be slab bing it much on this bike, but it still can cruise 70 mph if needed. The seat, as some have said, is narrow and hard. I ride bicycles with much less padding and get by.
It's the complete opposite of the CB: light, tall, vibrating, and slow. It actually makes the CB feel incredibly powerful when I ride them back to back. I did order a slip on exhaust and Dynojet kit, so that should make it a little livelier and rowdy. Speaking of rowdy, this bike makes me want to do things generally frowned upon by LEO's. Were it not for all these pesky laws, I'd be tearing off across fields and hike/bike trails.

It is fun. I put a little over 90 miles on it riding around today. It definitely could use more power, but I knew what I was buying. Up to 45 mph, it will stay ahead of traffic easily. Best power is from 7-9k rpm. I think when I do the Dynojet Stage 2 and exhaust, it should give it a nice bump in the 5-7k range which will be useful in moving the bike above 45 mph. It's spinning just under 5k at 45 in 6th, so I think this will make the bike a bit more responsive up to 60 mph which is plenty fast for where I will be riding.
It feels about the same as my KLR250 I had around 15 years ago. Like the KLR, it gets about 65 mpg. The suspension is way better, as are the brakes. This thing, even with cheapo bias ply tires has decent grip. I plan on going to a 90/10 or 80/20 street/dirt tire when these wear out. Even on the dual sport tires I had on my KLR, I could lean it way over without it getting too squirmy.
So far, I am having a blast. It squirting through traffic nicely and I love the tall riding position. We have a popular twisty road where the motorcycles and sports cars go and I took it out there this afternoon. It's the first time I have had a bike I could pin the throttle at the apex and keep WOT all the way to the next corner because I was only getting up to 50 mph. It's a great way to improve you skills by riding a slow bike at 10/10ths. I plan on using this to take the advanced rider course so I don't risk dropping my CB. For that reason, I would recommend a supermoto because it's easier to live with some rash over some plastic fantastic sport bike. RC390 does looks like a blast. I love thumpers!

Nice, congrats. I've thought about a DR650 from time to time. I would love to see a 1970s Enduro style bike which had real seats.

I received my Dynojet kit and a DG slip on exhaust and finished the installation this evening. Pipe and jet kit are common mods for this bike along with removing the air box snorkel, bypassing the exhaust gas recirculation system, and enlarging the crankcase vent circuit. I did all that.
The pipe is loud. I installed an end cap insert that reduces the outlet to 1 inch which cuts a few dB of noise it is still loud, but not painfully so. For $160, I got the exhaust and two quiet core inserts. Jet kit was $50. I have a high flow filter coming tomorrow which was $20. So, for well under $250, the bike runs a lot better.
