Hmmm. So maybe just the air cooled boxer is afflicted?

Afflicted in the sense that you may need to top off the oil once a month or so. These engines have a general reputation for being considered bullet proof for decades, and if anything, the oil consumption gets better as the engine ages. The new liquid cooled boxers consume little or no oil out of the gate. Not sure what the technical reason might be, but it's considered normal by most air/oil cooled BMW riders. I definitely have never seen it coming out of the pipe, nor have been able to smell it in the 20+ years of riding the engine. We'll see what the Urban GS does.

^ +1, my riding buddy has 2007/1200cc with 50Km, he is the 3rd owner and never had any problem, plus his buddy has one with 170Km, went to many long distance trips, including Canada-Alaska-USA-Canada = 17+Km with no problems at all....He says the older/higher mileage the better his Beemer is

Life is short. Top of the oil and enjoy the ride.
