A friend of mine rode motors for Pasadena PD. He says most of the time spent on traffic patrol, you're stopped or going slow or going the opposite way. Then someone will speed by, and you need to accelerate as hard as safely possible to catch them as quickly as possible.

He says the ST1300s would smoke clutches as a result, but nothing else ever broke. (Fortunately, clutches are mounted up front). They tested Harleys and Indians, not quick enough. BMWs were quick enough but costly to repair. He says the old KZ1000P were best suited for city patrol, lighter, good acceleration, easy to work on.

They have a pair of Africa Twins to test right now, one a DCT.

Here is a BMW K75 with more than 1,000,000 km. First motor did 580,000 km, second one 350,000, bad luck with the third one, did only 30,000km. Now it runs with the 4. motor:

The engines are great. Especially with the older bikes like the K75. On the newer bikes, it's the stuff around the engine, like CAN Bus electronics, over-engineered ABS systems, and stuff like that. I'd still love to have one of the older bikes.

Africa Twins for police bikes? Huh, that seems cool. My hometown PD is currently testing Zero Electrics. Good for prowling around without attracting attention.

Redondo Beach PD has 2 Africa Twins. Officer I talked to preferred the clutch version, as do I.

There is a guy in South Dakota with a documented 1 million miles on a Harley Davidson and another guy I read about that has ridden 1 million miles on a Holdwing. I think the Harley was rebuilt 9 times, and the Goldwing 4 times.
