Just saw you found the problem. To each his own my eyeball; when it comes to tires, you have ONE on each end of the bike and you need them BOTH in perfect order all the time. I have personally had the plug-patch FAIL on me during a ride. Who needs that kind of trouble?
Just suck it up and replace the tire.
