I guess my only reason for mentioning the Actevo oil is that their claim to cling to metal for a longer time than other oils and thus helping with reducing wear on cold starts seems to imply that engine wear when cold starting after not having run for an extended period is a concern because the engine parts will be running dry for a short period before the oil pump supplies oil. RE: strange start - jimgl3_imp - 12-03-2018 this is not the first thread on starting problems RE: strange start - Cormanus - 12-03-2018 (12-03-2018, 11:30 AM)Searcher_imp Wrote:(12-02-2018, 01:30 PM)Cormanus_imp Wrote: Why, when Honda recommends GN4 and 87 octane fuel, would you worry about using it? Searcher, I don't use GN4 all the time. I so use the Australian equivalent of 87 octane. I was responding to what I read as slight surprise on GoldOxide's part that his bike started fine using the oil and fuel Honda recommended. I don't know, but I'd have thought that oil being the tenacious substance it is would mean that there's sufficient in all sorts of nooks and crannies for the engine not to be too troubled on start up. Does anyone know if oil clings to engine parts indefinately? If so, all he "clinging technology" advertising is just hype and there will still be oil on the engine parts after sitting in the garage all winter. I remember years ago people used to recommend pulling spark plugs and squirting some oil into the cylinders before storing bikes for winter. RE: strange start - max - 12-03-2018 Hi Searcher, all oil will stick to most surfaces and do a good job at it, i guess it's a bit like the water bottling plant that advertises crystal clear water, and thereby trying to convince customers that the other brand has a bit less clear water, get it? Oil is generally sloshed through our engine in such a way that it will make the engine outlast most here and that is part of the technology that we pay for, as far as storage and spraying oil in the cylinders, well it is probably better to have the engine run round the block,( not just idling in the garage) for 10 minutes or so every month on a fine day, that way corrosion has no chance to develop and everything keeps moving which is the most important aspect. I appreciate you will want to care for your bike as best you can, so do all of us and that's what i found over the years, to keep the engine ticking over is the best preservation for fuel, valves, injectors, tires, brakes, battery, and all other things that go round and round . Temps have been low '40s to 50 degrees. I was missing the sound of it after getting home from work and tried to start it...seemed to "crank" or "spin" strong, but just wouldn't fire up. Tried about 5-6 times, nearly started a few times, but nope. Tried starting with throttle wide open...would not start. Waited 5 minutes. Tried again, same thing first time, no start. Tried another time with throttle 1/4 open and it fired right up. Started 5 more times after that just fine. Three hours later, starts right up every time. Happy to report that since this episode a few weeks ago, bike starts just fine every time with no throttle help. RE: strange start - the Ferret - 12-20-2018 Awesome! RE: strange start - max - 12-20-2018 After reading searcher's post about wide open throttle i tried it myself and he is right, it won't start, i then tried it with my 919 hornet and the same happens; wide open throttle from startup produces a no-start. It may be a feature in the engine control unit to clear a flooded situation by inhibiting the injectors from dosing fuel, the pump does prime as usual but injectors just don't operate, or a way to perform a compression test but that is just a guess, anyway it is good to know about these things and glad the cb is happy again. RE: strange start - pdedse - 01-18-2020 So weird, just over a year later, and the exact same thing as described below happened just now, with nearly exact conditions--bike wasn't run for a week, temps in the low 40s. Except this time, I can't get it to start after waiting a couple of hours. Cranks fine, just don't turn over.
