Here's something to think about: I am restoring a 2003 Honda VFR800, and it needed a fuel pump. A friend of mine, who is a professional automotive mechanic, saw the VFR fuel pump and swore to me that it was the identical pump used in Japanese cars he has worked on, and that I could buy a new one at Pep Boys for less than $20.00. He was absolutely sure of this! Encouraged by this, I went to Ebay and purchased a brand new, Honda VFR800 fuel pump for about 1/10 the price of an official Honda, OEM fuel pump (made in China, of course). I tested the pump, and it works. I haven't installed it on the bike and started it yet, but I have no reason to believe it won't work.

interesting.... now if I could only find one that fits the gas tank of a CB1100 Deluxe ...
that reminds me- I might know where to get my hands on a 1978/79 era Honda CB750- any idea how hard is it to come by parts to restore something like that, and what parts for something like that might cost? I'm thinking it might not be an easy task to source parts for a 40 plus year old bike.

That depends on the year and model. 1979 was the first year of the DOHC motors, and they are quicker, faster, and in most ways better that the original SOHC bikes. Except in their value and reliability. They tend to be worth far less than pre-'78s.
And they had charging system and intake valve problems.
Lots of parts for the earlier ones, as they sold more, for longer.

Just a coincidence: Talked to another friend yesterday who just replaced the fuel pump in his 2008 Suzuki GSXR750. He told me he purchased a fuel pump for a Honda Civic at one of the local automotive discount parts stores for about 1/4 the cost of the Suzuki pump. He swears the pump was identical and installed easily. I am willing to bet if you removed the fuel pump from a Honda CB1100 and showed it to a knowledgeable auto mechanic or parts counter guy working at one of these discount auto parts stores, he could tell you which Japanese automotive fuel pump would work - and save you a lot of $.

I got more information from my friend who just replaced the fuel pump in his 2004 Suzuki GSXR70: Suzuki cost for a pump = $811.71 (Partzilla, on-line purchase). He bought a fuel pump from Pep Boys for a Honda Civic for $40.00 - works perfectly.
