Same here. Bent my key in the helmet lock on the 1st day. I bent it back and it would work in the helmet lock and the tank, but not in the ignition. Somebody mentioned above that the ignition probably uses more of the notches, and I think they're correct.
I had a new key made from my good spare and it worked in all three locks.

Every time that I get a new car or bike I have 2 spare keys made and use them.
The original ones are kept all together in a box in the basement.

The tank and helmet lock suck big time! What a poor design. Other than the hard seat, it is the feature I hate the most. I. Will bet over 25% of users will bend the key when in the helmet lock.

How does one bend the key in the helmet lock? Insert key, turn... where's the bending? I've had no problem whatsoever with either the gas cap or the helmet lock.

Hey Bob. The key is very long and only goes in the tank & helmet lock which is not deep and it leaves the long key sticking out making it easy to bend just by turning to unlock tank & helmet. I have read where people are taking a spare key cutting it down in length and then putting the head of key back on it. It want work in ignition any more but you want have to worry about a bent key!! You will know one day if key is just barley bent due to ignition hard to turn and hard to pull key out of ignition

I'll tell you how I did it. Put key in lock to take off the seat. Put bike on the centerstand. Key will bend against your leg as the bike moves up on the stand. I almost bent a second one just by walking close to the left side while the key was still in the lock.
Easily avoided by always taking the key out of the lock after using it.
I was probably the first one here to bend a key this way, but at least a few others have done it since.

when new, i have hard time insert the key to its locks and have to giggle the key to make it do something. You might want to reinsert the key and have a feel to turn it to ON position.
Honda gave me 2 keys with serial number and told me to keep the number so they can make the key for it, I dont know if VIN have anything to do with the key

The vin # should match the key code # but. If you go to get a key made with just the vin # a dealer should not make a key due to the bike being stolen. If you have the key code # they will have to make a key. Most states if you don't have key code # you must show your title with the vin # on it for proof of ownership.
