My understanding is some riders were going with the hard hoping to build up an insurmountable lead over the guys running super hards and hoping to be able to hang on long enough to finish.

The flaw in this reasoning became clear as Marquez was sliding about at the end, trying desperately to hold off Rossi's charge. A wiser move would have been to accept the inevitable and let Rossi through, settle for the 20 championship points. The heat of battle can trump proper reasoning though, especially in the younger mind.

Saw that wreck from a different angle yesterday and it appeared when Rossi pitches his bike over for the following left hander it changes the angle of his bike which knocks Marquez's front end out from under him. I'd venture to say if there hadn't been a left turn there, but a straightaway instead, Marques would have stayed upright. He'd have still lost, but he wouldn't have crashed.
wish I could find a video/view of that other angle.
Racing incident pure and simple.

There is really no doubt that Rossi would have won even if Marc had not crashed. His lap times were simply stunning, and at the moment of the pass he was still lapping faster than the previous laps whereas Marc was a good half a second slower per lap. It was, in my opinion, a desperate move from Marc which shows that he does have some weakness, and also shows the sheer determination of Rossi. I am stunned that at his age and with all that he has done that he can still find the fire in himself to race like he did yesterday. That was the race of a twenty year old!

Can you imagine the trust they must have for one another to follow a fellow rider into a 150 mph turn just inches from their rear wheel and trust they are not going to do something stupid? Those multiple turn, multiple passes back and forth crossing from inside to outside and vice versa really amaze me.
I don't trust being that close to anyone ahead of me or behind me.

I think trusting the other racers in that way is simply part of any racing. I used to race karts for a long time, and although we did not go at the same speeds as a MotoGP bike, my kart did have a top speed of over 100mph all the while sitting an inch above the ground. When racing, it was normal to follow somebody literaly centimeters behind them while slip streaming. For the most part it was never a problem as you siimply knew what the other guy was doing. However, it was a real pain when you came up against a beginner who didn't real know what they were doing!
Haga was probably the bike racer who would stick the closest to his competitors. Looked really scary at times....
