Its a common courtesy, just is it is for bicyclist. I try to keep it as simple as possible by by putting my palm on the bar end weight ( just in case counter steering is needed) and extending my hand never taking it off the bars.

I always try to wave, but if unable to do so I will do a simple head nod.
