With respect to the above mentioned mileage record, one might translate this into, "more fun into each mile", not "more miles" or more miles "than the others".
If the XXX rode 6 days a week each week, and the YYY rode only 4 days a week, what the heck is this supposed to mean ? And if YYY rode 6 days too, but did less miles ... ??
Addicted to a world with as many species alive as possible, all I can see is more miles = more gas burned (and this is why the Saudies call the shots, and we KTA). But I respect other people's opinions - no flamed responses please.

Until corporations who are responsible for the lion's share of pollution stop deflecting their transgressions by guilt shaming Joe Commuter for burning gasoline in his ULEV (in what are now some of the lowest hydrocarbon emitting engines ever produced) to get to his job that feeds his family while they carelessly continue to dump "forever chemicals" into drinking water sources, or belch pollution by using bunker oil in cargo ships, or burn jet fuel at such high elevations that it takes years to come back to the ground, etc. I think it's a bit like stepping over dollars to pick up pennies and misses the low hanging fruit by a long shot.
But just like The Dude said, that's just like my opinion, man.

Everything you say is correct, but it should not be used as an excuse to do nothing, to not think, to not see.
Let the big guys do what we all can and should ask them to do. Let’s talk about it, discuss it, work on it. Fine. But a million little guys do their fair share of damage. And one needs to talk about this too. There is no good reason to shout hurrays when one’s mileage topped that from last year, or that of your neighbor.
I reckon this is why volunteer rider statistics are kept in a separate document. It means something to somebody.
To have statistical achievements waved around like some sort of trophy - I am unsure if Forum members really care. We all ride and to varying lengths depending on our living dispositions.
In the end, it is the quality of the ride that resonates with many riders I meet. Some riders ride just so they can recreate the feeling, or improve on some sweet clutch recipe on some distant favourite road at some speed and lean angle.
For me, riding is literally therapy-on-demand that non-riders do not have access to. I ride all seasons and the bike is not an ornament because once you are gone from this place, the "Queen Ornament" that was so preciously polished and rolled to the back of a heated garage will be sold on Facebook (or whatever) by the next-of-kin so they can get the latest next generation iPhone. And the documented mileage? Nobody will care. Nobody. Many of the bike photos will be disposed or deleted.
So, the bikes are here today, for YOU to enjoy and connect to the world in your way. Just - ride.

A lot of interesting comments these last few posts. Sometimes I ask myself why I do ride for pleasure...so many different reasons:
1) for local day rides--looking at homes, country spaces to allow the mind to consider if we'd like to move as retirement approaches, to see if I can find a unique photo opp with bike in the picture--and I do enjoy sharing them in the forums (I ask myself why? am I in need of attention like a teen feeling better about self if people "like" the photos? I don't know, maybe...is that a terrible thing? Perhaps one simply enjoys sharing something they find beautiful). Local rides allow me to decompress, to be out in the elements. To keep whatever riding skills I may have sharp. But somehow the local day rides always feel better if combined to a trip to the store, or maybe combined with commute to work; in short, if there's a practical reason for the ride...maybe that's an indication I'm looking for a justification to ride.
2) but another reason I ride is for the mult-day trips. I absolutely love to do 3-5 day trips in Eastern Oregon, to camp, to find new routes, the views, the small towns, to take in the smells of agriculture. The solitude, the planning, the breakdowns, the 'this road or that?' decisions, the sunsets, the gas station encounters. Less frequent, but also love the long-distance rides here in the USA and through Mexico and Central America, and I hope to make it to South America one day. To explore, connect with others from different cultures, languages...I'd rather ride to Argentina--or take a boat to Australia--than do either by plane.

my family/children are in the garage........
You have obligations towards a family, I mean, they are vehicles, not things to stay around...
I can dedicate a lot of time to the hobby bike... other people (have to) give priority to other activities/things...
Photography is my second hobby......why should I keep my pictures just for myself.....when sharing is so easy......and other people seem to be happy about it
What can I say, the km just happen. For me it is absolutely not important to have as many as possible at the end of the year...
People used to drive a lot more km here not only 2-3000km like now
or here in our very small country where driving for 2 hours is equivalent to half a trip around the world. or rather we have a completely different feeling for distances here

I can think of a personal reason why that is worth celebrating, for me at least. The more I am able to ride, the more it reflects on how I feel now vs. the past. If I am riding more, that is a good thing. Even though I don't post my mileage (probably more out of embarrassment in comparison to Ferret, PB and everyone else at that echelon), I still read everyone else's daily ride posts and find motivation therein.
Mostly though, when I ride, I feel a mental zen and oneness with the world around me. My brain is somehow able to silence the minutia that is normally swimming around, accomplishing nothing of significance. The quickening of the mind and clarity of focus that stems from trying to make every downshift silky-smooth, the exhilaration of riding the perfect line in and out of a corner, the visceral feeling of the machine talking to you through the vibrations in your legs, feet and hands while it defies inertia and shoots you up with that rush of adrenaline that awaits at every stop light. That is something I relish and it occupies my idle mind far more than it should when I can't ride. I find no guilt in sharing that experience with those that appreciate the same.

Gasoline consumption, as you can see, I change regularly, or my 125cc machines need 1.5l - 1.7l / 100km with the way I drive......half of my bikes are 125cc.......with the CB1100 I need 3.9l .....i.e. more than half more......I also had 3.5 liters with the CB........who of you also drives so efficiently?
I don't need anything big car to get from A to B ......for 23 years and 100,000km I have and had still a diesel consumption of 2.9l/100km....btw. ..its a smart

Before, when I only had 1-2 bikes, I could remember how many km I had at the beginning of the year. It usually came to 13-15,000 km after 12 months
Now that I've had so many bikes for 5-6 years.....I wrote down the km for the first time last January.....and now I was a bit surprised myself.....
