CANBUS is a cool deal, I'm sure most all automobiles use it. It just uses a single thin data cable to every component. A lot less copper wire, reduces vehicle weight. Multiple computers throughout the vehicle communicate with the various components and data about the precise operation of each component is available.

Getting back to your thermistor, now I recall, I have 2012 Chevy van that was subject to a fuel pump malfunction advisory. GM said some of these were failing, but not all. Dealer was able to run a self-test on the fuel pump (mounted in the tank of course) to see if there were any signs of overheating. No problems were found. I believe that thermistor reads and records data on the fuel pump which is stored for some period of time and accessible. Also any time the parameters exceed a preset that is permanently stored in the ECU. So the OBD reader would show that event. That's likely the reason for a thermistor inside the tank and pump.
