How to tell if has ABS - lagoje_imp - 12-04-2013

I believe (but not 100% certain) that the ABS models have a tube that "combines" both calipers on the front. Here is a pic of mine with ABS. Anyone with non-ABS have this?

Those are hydraulic brake fluid hoses. My NON ABS has separate brake fluid hoses running from each caliper up to a junction bolted to the center of the lower triple tree.

Wow that looks like a pretty complicated system, I 'd like to see better, clearer close up with better light pics of that sometime if you get the chance.

I stepped out to the garage and took
a few more. Will have better lighting tomorrow.

I'll check tomorrow to see if anything connects to the rear brake. I think Front and rear are linked in the combined ABS

It's pretty complicated because it's also a linked breaking system.

Wonder how hard that would be to bleed?

He could have just slammed on the brakes on wet pavement....maybe easier to look for the slotted ring, though. Wink

Rear wheel on NON ABS model .. notice slotted ring.. this is NOT an ABS ring on this model, it is a speed sensor

I own a 2013 CB1100 theoretically without ABS (no dash light), but has the slotted ring on the rear wheel as you show. Why do they have a speed sensor on the rear wheel of the non-ABS model, unless it's just for the speedo/odo-meter?

After researching the issue for a few days, such as by looking at the Honda website, and calling service at my shop and having them tell me the slotted wheel and wire are for ABS, I have come to the following conclusion: The base model of the bike ($9,999) has rear-wheel only 'ABS', i.e., equipment that keeps the rear wheel only from locking up; unlike what Honda calls "Combined ABS", which not only does this but also applies a small amount of front brake when you step on the rear. The Combined ABS model is the CB1100-'A' (as shown on the cover of the owner's manual), the basic model is designated simply CB1100 (plus year designation such as 'D' for 2013 in the U.S.)

I suppose the reason Honda doesn't call the basic model 'CB-1100 rear ABS' or something is to avoid confusion, so people getting the base model won't think they're getting the Combined ABS.

Nice try. The rear wheel sensor IS only for the speedo/odometer......and the speed limiter.

and don't stomp the rear and expect it not to skid.

I thought the electronic speedos on recent Honda bikes uses a sensor on the transmission 'output shaft', i.e., something in the gearbox?

Nope. Speedo takes reading from rear wheel ring. No rear-only ABS - I've locked the rear a few times.
