I've had a few shin bruises in the past few months from hitting debris of some sort (small rocks, I think) while riding down the freeway.

+1. It doesnt take much to break a lens and I too have been peppered in the last month from small road debris.

Do you both get them from astern though?

Possibly kicked the lens while mounting or dismounting?

Bummer. Good news is that it's a cheap and easy fix!

There is no other damage to the assembly. I am at a loss for words.

Dang! Somebody stole your left side exhaust pipe!! Wink

Years ago a buddy of mine and I were out riding, and on the freeway home from a canyon run, we got caught in bogged down traffic. Being young guns and in California, we "carefully" split lanes to get through the mess, me following him. He clipped someone's right side mirror with his left rear turn signal, and the lens exploded, looking just about exactly like your picture (didn't look like it affected the mirror at all). Oddly, the back of the housing stayed intact. He never heard or felt the contact, and was completely unaware of anything happening.
When we got home, I it was all I could do not to crack up as he dismounted and started wheeling his bike into the garage, since he still had no clue. He finally caught my smirking and asked what the hell was so funny?! I pointed at the rear of his bike and he almost dropped a brick!
Soooo, that's my theory with your bike!

This can easily happen from a couple things:

!) the set screw was too tight, which may have caused a stress crack that eventually got worse through the bike vibrations and broke

2) aftermarket lenses, which are typically a harder, more brittle formulation that the more plyable (and shock absorbant) OEM lens

I've dealt with this for years with Harley aftermarket lenses, to the point where I finally got sick of it and went back to OEM lens and only tightened the screw just enough to be snug and used Locktight. Stopped breaking any more lenses...

I was splitting yesterday, but it was there at my first stop and I didn't get back on the freeway. I must have kicked it when I dismounted.
