Hello, according to someone, cross beam is used to express the placement of the 4-cylinder-in line engine whih was positioned accross the frame beam.
However most people say it does not mean nothing exactly.
I have asked to the boss of the communication for honda europ, Ian baker, I answered it was a question without solution, nobody now knows exactly what it means exactly.

According to someone it means cross beam because the motor is between the frame. But most of people said the meaning is lost or did not exist realy.

CB has been around longer than the 4 cyl engine. If anything, it's a diminutive of Cub.
