RE: A note about this forum, it's history, an apology and an announcement - peterbaron - 01-16-2018 Guth, Keep your DIAMOND TALL SHIP sailing at the present direction and speed with fully blown sails... ...my grandfather used to say to me:: "remember, only dead fish float with river flow"... Thank you for NOT selling this site , as I just cannot imagine a better forum than this one, including moderators.... This forum allows me to share my automotive experience with its members, as well as learn new things, I have not learnt/known so far.....and vent off pressure after work. Donation needed? = send me pm. Best regards, peterbaron RE: A note about this forum, it's history, an apology and an announcement - Frulk_imp - 01-16-2018 This is an exceedingly well moderated/managed site. However, that's only part of the appeal for me. The other reason it appeals to me is the memberships self-imposed decorum limits (as Redbirds so appropriately alluded to above my post). There's no doubt in mind that I have more in common with this bikes ownership circle than one of the other makes I own. And there's also no doubt in my mind that in a communal setting I'd probably hit it off with most, if not all of you. On that note, on 3 everyone move closer to the monitor for a virtual CB owners hug. Yes, you too Ferret, this is not considered cheating on your wife..3-2-1...I said CLOSER Ferret! About site activity: You know, we don't do too bad in that regard when you consider we're a small, niche model, motorcycle ownership circle whose forum site allows almost no discussion of anything not related to it, or not directly to motorcycling in general. Rboe alluded to another motorcycle site he used to (and I still) frequent that is run like a campfire setting. Folks sitting around a fire discussion whatever (though the site DOES NOT allow politics). If we were to do that we WOULD have drama and the administrators would be a lot busier. On that site I occasionally weigh in on some non motorcycle threads that I have interest in and to make up for my lack of practical knowledge and participation in mechanical threads. This is the CB1100 Forum, created for a somewhat limited production, niche bike with a narrow appeal to (as it turns out) an ownership that still understands the meaning of respect, politeness, and common decency. I don't want to enlarge our 'Circle of Trust' just for increased activity because the overall experience would more than likely be less stellar than what it is now.. So, to clarify, first, I never at any time suggested Guth was trying to convince anyone to purchase a CB1100 to increase the post count. LOL! I was trying to do that! Or rather, I was making an effort to participate in a conversation started by VLJ, who evinced a keen interest in purchasing said CB1100. Now let me get to the irony part. It was member Frulk who noted the thread on the suitability or non-suitability of the CB1100 for any given rider's needs resulted, after five pages of chatter, in his maintaining his opinion that he REALLY, REALLY likes his CB1100. Thus, we've got five pages of possibly useless banter, at least for some members! I found that ironic and funny. Because, really, who cares if it runs to 50 pages? Aren't we all just trying to have some fun talking bikes? On the topic of creating conversation, I am sure I suggested the Ferret was good at that because Guth wrote this: (01-16-2018, 09:21 AM)Guth_imp Wrote: I'll start this post by taking a moment to apologize to Ulvetanna for recently making a bit of a "peppered" statement (as he put it) about him that was uncalled for. It's not an excuse, but I'd note that he recently managed to really to get under my skin by implying that I would try to convince someone to purchase a CB1100 just to crank up the activity level on this site and that has stuck with me. The reality is that nothing could be further from the truth. Just to be clear, I don't care about pushing up the activity on this site nor am I worried about the number of active members we have on hand at any given time (as I've previously noted). I started this forum simply because I wanted to create a place on the web where people that enjoyed the Honda CB1100 could discuss the bike (along with other motorcycle-related content as it turned out). If we don't happend to have much to talk about at times then that's okay. But it was the Ferret I was referring to, and it seemed to me that post was very obviously in jest. You must be referring to my post about the Ferret actually going out and doing 100 mph+ to see what the bike was like. You have to admit that was surprising! No matter what anyone else did, or why they did, it I personally returned to this forum for the specific reason of increasing the chatter, no matter what it was about. I took almost a year off the forum and anyone can easily check to see that my first most recent posts came on the heels of the "Skinny Posts" thread. That said, I just read this: (01-16-2018, 11:24 AM)Frulk_imp Wrote: This is an exceedingly well moderated/managed site. However, that's only part of the appeal for me. RE: A note about this forum, it's history, an apology and an announcement - max - 01-16-2018 Guth, as a newby i have some difficulty engaging in most of the threads, but enjoy them and keep quiet. This forum has a special appeal to it, like all the others mentioned, i find myself drawn to it and feel that i should compliment you and all who contribute to it at this time, i find it hard to imagine a team that is more balanced and good-mannered than this one, not to mention helpful and i am sure i echo this for many on here. ![]() max RE: A note about this forum, it's history, an apology and an announcement - noroomtomove - 01-16-2018 G'day Guth. As it can not be recalled by me that thanks has been your way in the past please let me take this opportunity to do so. I am grateful. Regards NRTM RE: A note about this forum, it's history, an apology and an announcement - Desert viper_imp - 01-16-2018 Thank you Guth for this awesome forum. I wholeheartedly agree about making SAMURIDER the banner company. Thanks to you and Mr. T, I am very close to converting my Deluxe into a full on Whitehouse K10, Red with gold stripe. As soon as I get the Wyverns I will install everything at once! This is not an Internet forum... - rotor - 01-16-2018 There is an urgent need to properly analyze why exactly is this not an Internet forum, but an odd-ball early twenty first century Internet sociological phenomenon instead. Is it because how it is managed, or is it that this particular piece of machinery is a magnet for old-fart misfits, not capable of dealing with the modernity in general, and contemporary Internet forum culture in particular? RE: A note about this forum, it's history, an apology and an announcement - flynrider - 01-16-2018 Hey Guth, Thanks for making this forum possible and not selling out. I was a member of a very popular and active aircraft specific forum that sold out. Much like this one, it had hundreds of civil, helpful and polite participants and active moderation to keep out the disruptive element. Within a few months of the sale, the forum was as good as dead. I had participated for over a decade and was very sad to see it go. These website aggregators are only looking for website hits, which translate to ad revenue. They care very little about the culture or character of the forum, and don't do anything to maintain it. One of the reasons that this forum is such a great place to hang out is that you, The Ferret and Cormanus make the effort to keep it that way. I've been here for nearly 5 years and stop by just about every day because I'm genuinely interested in the people who post here and the fact that we can discuss our favorite subject (in sometimes excruciating detail ). BTW, I have been baffled by the comments about post counts getting thin in recent months. I'm not really sure what level of activity people are expecting, but I've yet to log in and find nothing of interest. I know of a few formerly popular forums that only get one or two posts a day, if any. The CB1100 is a niche bike, which makes this a niche forum. I'm actually surprised at the amount of activity it generates. I think much of that is due to the efforts of the site owner, moderators and regular participants. Take any of those out of the equation and you end up with something like the former U.K. CB1100 site. Thanks again, Guth for making this a place worth visiting daily. As a few others said, I would be glad to support the continued maintenance of the forum. Drop me a P.M. if I can contribute. My point was after 5 pages of pro AND CON I had yet to see anything tangible mentioned that mattered to me personally that had any impact on my opinion about the CB1100. By all means, take the discussion up to 50 pages, that's what the site is here for and I'm not trying to discourage it. I did read every single comment. I just checked on another motorcycle site. They have a thread going that's 151 pages long on 'steel cut oats'. Lets say there's 18 replies on each page (a guess). That means roughly 2,700 or so comments about steel cut oats. I'm ok with reading 50 pages related to the CB suitability/non-suitability for any given riders needs even if the outcome is I'm not changing my opinion. BTW, this is one of the better discussions we've had going for a while.... RE: A note about this forum, it's history, an apology and an announcement - Ole - 01-16-2018 ADVrider has 340,000 members. It is solely owned by a Silicon Valley entrepreneur. He has recently stated that ADV is going to start selling advertisements. Good on you mr Guth for holding the line,,, |
