My bike came with a Datatool TraKKING system installed by the dealer. I have never used it as there is a monthly subscription required and my machine is kept in an alarmed garage and not left in dodgy areas. It is permanently connected to the bike's battery but claims a low drain current.
Another system I've seen recommended (by The Missenden Flyer in the UK) is the Monimoto device which has its own battery which lasts about a year, but also requires a monthly fee for the sim card.

I have the Monimoto, not a 100% full featured tracker but quite good device and reasonably priced. You need the MM6 version for the USA. Works on its own battery power which last about 9 months. Replacement batteries are reasonably priced. It won't stop your bike being stolen but you will know when it has been moved and have an idea where it has been moved too. They want to be concealed though so they don't work well on naked bikes, they work well buried in fairing panels that are hard to get in to. The annual fees are very low for the year, it costs me €3 a month. You cant beat a big heavy chain and a cover though. The chain only makes sense if you can chain it to something substantial though otherwise bikes are just lifted whole into the back of a van in 2 minutes.

Thanks again to all respondents!

In addition to considering the informative comments here, I keep browsing the Internet. There seems to be not a single device on offer that does not require a contractual relationship, and includes leaving the location log on vendor's servers? Or did I miss such a product?

You have to use somebody's network for tracking and/or positioning, why would you think someone would offer that for free?

You have to use somebody's network for tracking and/or positioning, why would you think someone would offer that for free? Of course the device must communicate, and of course I must pay for that communication service. But there is no reason why I shouldn't be able to plug into the device my local SIM card, and have that card, with its pre-paid text or data allocation communicate with my mobile, bypassing the device manufacturer. I would expect such device to cost a bit more, as it does not provide the vendor with the ability to sell or otherwise exploit my personal data.

https://www.simtek.io/ (They claim the event data is encrypted.)

I see. Monimoto do let you use your own SIM card, in Europe at least, not sure about USA.
