RE: Pretty Much My First Big Boy Long Trip Ever - Charlie Bravo_imp - 08-17-2021 It may have been said already, but I didn't see it; don't use WD40 on your chain. The solvents in it will ruin your X or O-ring chain by destroying the seals. Use chain lube. The axels in the links are presealed, hence the -ring chain, but to lube the outside of the rollers and the sprockets, apply a light coat of gear oil or even wheel bearing grease. Avoid applying too much, it will get flung off. RE: Pretty Much My First Big Boy Long Trip Ever - the Ferret - 08-17-2021 Depending on which forum you are on that's either the truth or a myth lol. RE: Pretty Much My First Big Boy Long Trip Ever - misterprofessionality - 08-17-2021 I just helped somebody cut a chain off and replace it because of wd40 use. RE: Pretty Much My First Big Boy Long Trip Ever - 4 Paws_imp - 08-18-2021 Congratulations, glad you enjoyed your first long ride. The CB is an excellent bike that will give you years of trouble free riding pleasure. Cornering skills will come with practice and patience. Read and study. Keep an eye on air pressure and try to tune your suspension for your weight. Your 2013: still running same brake fluid and fork oil? Worth investigating. Purchase some chain lube and use it rather than WD40, “suitably for intended purpose”. Tail or tank bag is useful. Enjoy. RE: Pretty Much My First Big Boy Long Trip Ever - the Ferret - 08-19-2021 interesting vid on WD and orings from the MC garage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fzyk4nq3ug0 RE: Pretty Much My First Big Boy Long Trip Ever - suryamp_imp - 08-19-2021 My first big boy long trip was from San Diego to San Luis Obispo. Took my longer since I took frequent breaks. My limit is 45min before I start to notice a decrease in my focus and my muscles from becoming too stiff RE: Pretty Much My First Big Boy Long Trip Ever - Tev62 - 08-19-2021 WD40 also make a chain lube, DRB146 may of been referring to that. I use WD-40 forever clean 'n' wipin' final drive chains. Never had an issue ever. But heck, I'd rather not be cleanin' and lubin' a chain when I could have a shaft drive.
RE: Pretty Much My First Big Boy Long Trip Ever - peterbaron - 08-19-2021 I use a combination of chain lube; wd40, chain spray grease, silicone grease spray - water repellent by Wurth, wax and heavy 80/90 gear oil.....not all 5 at the same time. RE: Pretty Much My First Big Boy Long Trip Ever - Stichill_imp - 08-19-2021 The "WD" in WD-40 means water displacement. I've used it to quickly get rid of water on a chain so I can then apply proper chain lube. |
