CB1100 vs The Field - eddi0_imp - 06-10-2020
Hello!
First time poster. I'm in the market for a new bike (last bike was a 919) and I was unaware that the CB1100 existed until a week ago. I am a huge fan of the CB750 styling from the 1970s so this 1100 really rings a lot of bells for me. I had no issues with the 919 other than the exhaust location made even a short ride a smelly ride (clothes were doused with exhaust). I test drove a 2013 CB1100 yesterday and it was the smoothest bike I've ever ridden...by far. HOWEVER, as some have reported, when I got it up to 65 MPH+ (4k RPM+) it was not as smooth. In fact, I felt like between the noise and vibration that it could make highway trips laborious. I see the 2014 likely corrected the issue with additional gear but the cost of the 2014's is substantially higher.
Two main questions:
1) Is there a easy/somewhat cost effective way to correct the issue I am describing or would it just be better to look for a 2014? I would like to be able to do interstate driving/road trips if needed so those higher speeds/rpms are concerning.
2) Alternatively, does anyone have any recommendations for bikes that have similar looks without the issues above (I prefer Japanese/UJM/upright with 1970's styling) in the $4500-$6000 range?
Seems like what I'm after is difficult to find as there isn't a lot of bikes that combine the UJM retro style with ability to use both city and highway use.

G'day eddi0 and welcome to the forum. I've only ridden the 5-speed bike and I've not had a problem with vibrations on plenty of ling distance touring. Others own or have owned both 5 and 6 speed models and will likely give you their view.

Had the '13 model/55Kms and presently ride the '14 one/42Kms.
I do long distances, from 200-1100 kms/day and have no problem with vibrations or anything else.

Hello eddi0, welcome to the forums! I had a '14 Standard (the black one) and currently have a '17ex. They both are 6 speed. I did extensive hiway riding at 70mph+ on the '14 on a trip from OR to Illinois and back, and while I have heard mention of "vibrations" on the CB, it simply has not been my experience.

For some, vibration is not a problem, but for others like myself, it's more than an annoyance. I had a 2013, changed the gearing as much as was practical, but it wasn't enough. So I sold it when the 6-speed 2014s came out, and bought a 2014 Standard, and now have a 2017.
If the vibration bothers you, I'd definitely recommend finding a 2014. I've seen 2014 standards in the same $5000-$6000 range as the 2013s. I sold both of mine, with less than 10k miles for $5200 and $5500.

When I first rode the CB, my immediate reaction was, as yours, that it was the smoothest bike I have ridden, but there was vibe between 5-6k rpm.
I took some grip puppies (foam grips) off another bike I had, and put them on the CB.
Now I honestly don't notice any vibe, and I wonder if the vibe was just in comparison to the rest of the rev range being so smooth.
Mine is a 6 speed.

Mine's a 2013, and there's definitely some noticeable motor vibrations around 5k. I've found that either going 65 or 95 really helps with that.
A few weeks ago I ran into a group of older guys in town for a track event, all on 1000cc supersports. The CB spent a great deal of time at 112 that day . . . the vibrations didn't bother me at all

Not sure why but I prefer the "red" color as opposed to the black so trying to find a 2014 DLX near Colorado. Anyone have a good idea what I "should" be paying for one? And if anyone has a clean/low miles 2014 DLX please PM me.

That's really interesting,there is another thread on here with a poll of which models "typically" had a vibration and the 6 speed was a much lower percentage (which makes some sense). Based off all these responses it seems like it's fairly normal to have a stronger vibration between 4-5k but then minimizes above and below that.

I had issues with right hand tingling on 2012 Triumph Bonneville and 2016 Moto Guzzi V7II at cruising speeds, typically 70-85 MPH.
My 2014 CB1100 6 speed was the only one with no hand issues, even on 500 mile day rides.
The issue is present on my 2020 Can AM Ryker, but it is cruising at 6,000 RPM.
By comparison, the CB is 100 MPH at ~ 5,000 RPMS. The Ryker is 7,600. 82 HP rated @ 8,000.
