The CB1100 Community Forum

I think I've finally found my long ride windshield set up for the CB. A National Cycle Plexistar 2 (which I scored from Amazon Warehouse 'open box' for $135 shipped) and an MRX X-creen Sport 'fin' type add-on topper.

The Plexistar 2 does excellent by itself, but I like to keep the big grasshoppers off of my helmet shield (and out of my helmet when open) and the MRA X-creen does the trick. I got it off eBay for less than $90 as a dealer demo model. I used the 'non-drill' adapters for installation of the X-creen.

To appease the anorak nerds out there - the distance from the ignition switch to the top of the Plexistar 2 alone is 18 inches, and to the top with the X-creen installed (and at highest setting) is 21 3/4 inches. I'm 5'8" and can see over the top of the X-creen spoiler when sitting up in the saddle (I use an Alaskan Sheepskin cover - so calculate in about 1/2-3/4" if you have out your slide rule you geeks!).

It works very well, not as well as my ST1100 touring bike did with an MRA 'topper' on the Honda stock shield, but the CB1100 is basically a naked bike, not a touring motorcycle, eh? It makes a bit more noise than without a shield, and at certain speeds the X-creen even gets a tiny annoying whistle but with earplugs it is very tolerable.

I did 1150 miles last weekend in very windy to calm conditions and it performed well. At slow speeds in 95F+ temps it shielded a bit too much and my Carmex melted in my tank bag. I took a chance and believed the Plexistar's literature that it was easy off/easy back on, and removed it for a portion of my trip (I camped in the Colorado National Monument NP). I had almost no tools, so this was scarier than you might think. It came off VERY easy (I wasn't worried about that) and it actually went back on without a hitch at 0615 yesterday morning in limited dawn light.

I can't imagine even trying out another set up after testing a few now. I'll probably be selling my MRA Vario Touring screen since this works so well. I can remove the X-creen topper with an allen wrench in seconds, or remove the whole shebang altogether, so I don't think I'll be using the Vario anymore. Wow that's some set up. Glad you found something that works for you. Air management is such a tricky thign. Many spend years, big $$$ and never do get it worked out to their satisfaction.

It's certainly a 'shield'! Like Ferret, I'm glad you found something that works for you,and makes the CB a better touring bike.

That windscreen looks great. I like that adjustable thing on top. Very nice.

There is a problem I can see clearly. This thing is so transparent that those bugs will never see you coming and won't be able to get out of the way. I recommend spray painting something like a big "X" across the front in order to save billions of little insect lives. Especially at night. Perhaps you could take it off at night and that would save even more of the little critters? I'm sure you already thought of that.

Scott, did you consider the larger X-creen touring spoiler? If so what made you decide on the smaller sport model? I recently installed a PS2, I like it but have had an issue getting it to fit the way I'd like. The screen rubs on the instrument housings and I've had to put small strips of foam between the shield and housings. I haven't pulled the trigger on the X-creen yet.

Here is the larger X-creen Tour on my Street Shield EX. It works well in keeping the bugs off my face shield, is quieter and smoother than just the Street Shield EX alone, and has never whistled (thank God!) The width is perfect for the Street Shield and looks like it was designed to match the same taper towards the top!

It's still below my nose so I don't have to look through it. It is actually the laminar air flow created above and between the X-creen that moves the air over my face shield. That being the case ScottWally, you could probably rotate yours downward like mine and it would likely still be just as effective...possibly more so.
