The resolution of the image is not so good but I think your pointing to the round shiny section of the throttle body. It's usually a dull silver component installed as a seal. Lots of folks glue in a shiny coin to dress it up a little. The engine looks quite different because of the modification mentioned by Cormanus, removal of the standard air box and four individual filters fitted in its place ... way cool IMO.

The advantage of pods is an open look.
4 pods may actually be slightly less $ than a factory air box filter.
There could be an air flow advantage on some bikes, but I am skeptical of that on the CB1100.

The silver cap on the throttle body looks like it covers a location where an O2 sensor used to be.

The benefit of this installation is that it removes all pressure losses across snorkel, air cleaner and funnels. It breathes much better. It would a custom fuel map to run correctly. Likely you'd want to use an autotuner, so you'd install an O2 sensor with that setup, maybe the reason why that one is missing.

according to the thread that was posted above, it looks like it won't actually have any performance increase, but changing the throttle body instead might have more of an effect. am i wrong?

On many engines, yes.
On the CB1100, very little difference.
I cut off the top of the "funnel" on my CB: no appreciable difference other than I like the intake sound. My 2012 Triumph benefitted significantly with snorkle removal.

Stock throttle bodies have more than enough CFM capability.
Not much power to be gained on the 1140 motor with stock cams, AFAIK

so the conclusion of my dumb post in the end is this: the owner of the bike in the picture did it because Farkle.

follow up: is there any way to improve air intake in a way that increases engine performance? (along side fuel computer adjustments and exhaust system upgrades)
