We may drive out to see Mount Rushmore in a few weeks. Looking for a getaway that is kinda isolated and that fits the bill!
If you go, leave before early August (Sturgis rally — lots of traffic and congestion).

Going from South Dakota to North Dakota was very lonely! Lots of "little farm towns" with no services. Had to stop and ask the one person I saw outside on the town street where to buy gas ... he gave me some crazy butt directions that finally got me to another town's self serve that was closed (but could still buy gas) ... 50+ yellow jackets descended on my windshield to feast on all the dead stuff. Very pretty farm land, but issolated

LOL been there twice by car. We call it the 4 big heads. It truly is amazing if you think about it, how it was made and the size scale. Devils tower isn't too far it's cool too, and crazy horse but it isn't done yet.
May take you up on the 4 east coast states. I drove them in a car last year and don't want to go thru New York City/washington bridge again...EVER lol.

Fortunately, you can get NY without going too near the city. I mapped out a route a couple of years ago when you were having so much tummy trouble that took in a lot of beach and coastal roads. It went through Asbury Park, home of Bruce. I have his mother's address around here somewhere...
Still have the map out ? I've ridden thru some beautiful parts of new York when I rode up to bar Harbor a few years ago.

Here is the basic outline. You would likely want to swing wide of NY rather than taking 95, but I've driven it many times and survived.
