Sounds like an opportunity to go LED in the taillight. It might decrease the possibility of a taillight "blackout" since there is an array of LEDs that are usually energized. Of course, the LED unit's power regulator could still fail disabling all LEDs, however, at least it would not likely be caused by mechanical vibration.
