My thought is this forum should be a clean slate with as much useful data migrated into an archive as reasonable. It should not be a tedious manual copy/paste process. No one should be asked to do that.
One other challenge with porting data, not all users from the old forum will come over to this one. Some have sold their bikes and moved on, others may have just not stayed active on the forum. So if you cannot port user accounts first, there will be a discrepancy when the users don't exist on the new forum but you may not want to create an account for them since you don't have their contact info.
Or, what if someone new signs up here taking a previously existing username on the old site? Then, the person using a username from the old forum doesn't match the person using that username on this forum? So you end up with an archive database that may not necessarily match up between the two forums.
Not a big deal for people who come over right away, but a couple possibilities.
