Culd someone with a shop manual check page 14-22 and tell me what the picture in the lower right hand corner is supposed to be telling me? Or did they insert the wrong picture?
You're right, that picture is from a different bike. On our bikes, of course, the chain is nowhere near the brake caliper. It might be from a single sided swingarm bike like the VFR.
the photo is correct, lets break it down by field of view. the photo is shot from the left side next to the left rear shock, the next item is the swing arm at the lower portion of the photo, next is the drive chain, next is the cast silver wheel, next is the rear caliper, then the right side swing arm about mid photo. the swing arm portions are the only thing that is reflecting light at it'spainted top edges.grap your manual and look at the back side of the caliper from the left side of the bike between the shock, the swing arm, the chain and the wheel.
Paul.
After looking at my manual I came to the same conclusion as Paul.

Since I have no mechanical skills I hesitated to post my opinion ( I program robots ) so I kept my opinion to myself.

Hmmm so we are looking at some kind of retainer for the pad ends on the back side of the caliper?

there is a spring there but the photo is showing the L shaped "ledge" which is part of the caliper bracket, not the caliper itself, and the tabs on that end of the pads resting on top of it (basically holding up that end of the pads).
