So I was riding the trusty CB yesterday and I noticed a nice loud tick, turns out its an exhaust leak at the port. Came out of nowhere, I've had this exhaust on for months and suddenly it started yesterday, totally random.

I'm going to get in there and fix it this weekend, anyone have any tips or tricks that can help me find the leak?

I've been googling like crazy so I'm probably going to get a rubber hose and put it up to each port and listen, just didn't know if there were some ol' school methods that may not show up on a quick google search?

Also I'm going to swap the gasket, I figure since I'm in there I'll just swap all 4? Let's hope that works!
No real trick other than that that I know of.

On other bikes I've had luck sealing exhaust leaks that spring up by simply backing out every header bolt, just till loose, giving each pipe a little jiggle and then retorquing. These metal gaskets don't tend to go bad, but it's easy for them to shift or get misaligned. YMMV of course.
Not really a trick to it except maybe try to find it immediately after a cold start most exhaust leaks are more noticeable when you first start it before engine warm up I would suggest to re torque all header flange nuts spec is 16lb ft
thanks fellas!

bad news, it wasn't an exhaust leak. I just spent 4 hours chasing it, i put my stock exhaust back on and its still ticking.

It sounds like its coming from the top end, and I just got it back from the shop b/c it was leaking after they adjusted the valves. Since it just so happens thats where they were working last i'm REALLY hoping there isn't a loose bolt or washer banging around in my engine.

I'll let you know what they tell me saturday.

what really gets me is I loved that exhaust system that was on it, but now that I've got the stock header back on I'm just going to leave it on. I don't feel like messing with it again...maybe in the future, we'll see.
Oh man, hope its nothing serious. Keep us informed
Did they (the shop) have to change any shims?
hope it worked out, any news yet?

nope, they were all in spec

Haven't heard anything back yet, they are closed today so it'll be tomo at the earliest...
totally forgot to reply to this my apologies.

Well, it turned out when i put this exhaust on I forgot to remove the old exhaust gasket (i got 3, musta left the last one in there).

So port #3 had 2 gaskets in there and it just wasn't sealed properly. Yep, I'm an idiot haha!

Pulled the exhaust, pulled out all 5 gaskets - reinstalled 4 - and she's purring like a kitten.

I'm pretty sure i'm over 90hp now; i had 89hp with my stock header, 2 bros slip on, pcv & custom dyno tune.
Since then I've added a full system and tsr air intake funnel - she pulls pretty hard now. I may throw it on the dyno this summer and see where she's at.

Seems like when a problem comes up, frequently it's directly related to that last thing that was done to the bike. Glad you found it! Must be a relief to know that nothing was mucked up at the shop.
