Tomorrow I am buying a new 2014 CB1100 black standard.
I plan to keep this bike for MANY years to come. Towards that
end I want to break in the engine properly. The Honda manual
seems a bit lacking on this subject.
Any advice on the best new engine break in process I would much
appreciate. Big thanks!

These break in threads are almost like oil threads. In general there we be two ways mentioned, then argued over. 1. Follow the manual, 2. ride it like you stole it!
I'm more the follow the manual kind of guy. Other than that, see the thread Cormanus posted.

The little manual that came with the bike has some recommended speeds for shifting to the next gear,these are very low speed upshifts,if memory serves me correctly it has you in 6th gear by 40 mph.This is very conservative and I followed it for the first 100 miles than gradually increased it a little bit and varied rpm by staying in a gear for a couple miles at a specific rpm and changed to another gear and a different rpm for a couple miles,major PIA but I've had good luck doing things this way.At 300 miles you can probably ride it however you feel like,have 325 miles on mine and haven't been over 5000 rpm yet.A whole lot of 1500 to 3500 rpm.
