Full Version: Are gas tanks coated with anything?

It does look like its plated or electrocoated with something that is a gray color in my tank. Whatever it is, it is not just bare metal.

Right, plating, not coating. Plating won't chip off. The plating would be a metal alloy compound which essentially becomes part of the tank.

Yes, technically they are all "coatings" but in reference to the OP, electroless or electroplating are quite different than paint-type chemical coatings. Far more durable, they don't usually chip or flake, and the bonding process is essentially permanent.
