LP would it not be saving a lot of work if nicky removed the drain plug by unclipping the metal ring with some pliers and see how much oil has accumilated in there?
If it turns out the drain is not full there is no reason to get into the airbox.
Mine was clear after 40.000 km and he mentioned the oil level was low, not overfilled.
Your advice " what did you do last before the fault appeared " seems a good starting point, we'll see what can be found today, i think although there is not a lot of oil around the filter it could be possible that there was something under the oil seal that made oil seep out over time, just guessing here.
And Nicky paper kitchen towels work great with removing grease and oil from the engine.
That would be a good idea Max.
I love you guys for the support. I can't emphasize enough. If I had a joke for everytime I heard I need professional help...haha! Appreciate the patience, though I'm not familiar with moto's, I have done my fair share of work on cars. I'm not familiar with the location of everything on the bike but can correlate terminology which helps...some.
Here is my update, pulled the gopro to get pictures that are actually clear but the window was still difficult to see where the oil level. I have two pictures, one after the quick ride and one when it was sitting for a bit. Lastly the area underneath that had the most oil and gunk, so I'll check this part after I ride some more.
Before cleaning, I rode down the street to pick up some clean and shop towels since I just moved and most of my stuff is still packed. When I got back I cleaned up the oil window and used a flat head to spin the cleaner, I positioned it at 12 o'clock. When it was warm, I didn't see much oil through the window. So I then I started cleaning all the oil/gunk(I don't think the mechanic cleaned this area). After I was finished, the oil level was in the middle of the lines and I didn't get any fresh oil.
Airbox - I didn't see any oil or leaking that high up so I didn't dig too deep in there.
Clutch reservoir - Appears to be full.
Drain plug - I'm going to run down right now as I couldn't pull it off, so I'll try with pliers this time and update in a few. --Update: Just took the cap off and it was empty. I thought it had some but I suppose not....this could have been the source then? Though when I originally noticed the leaking, it was difficult to tell if it was coming from here which is why I took that original picture of it.
With the notes on oil level and actually cleaning the window so I can see it more. I'm assuming that it was actually just residual or overflow oil at this point since I didn't see any fresh oil. Should I go for a ride now that I have it cleaned up and see if I get anymore fresh oil?
Nick,
To check the oil, according to the manual, bike on center stand, warm the engine and then let it sit for 2 or 3 minutes. Then the oil should be between the lines. It is kind of a pain to really tell if it is right or not. If I do mine like that, and it is at the upper lever after a couple of minutes, later it will be at the top of the window. Yours is showing between the lines, so is good. The ST1300 is the same way and both bikes are a pain to get "right". Others may chime in on this.
When the engine is running you aren't going to see oil in the window.
If you add more, don't add much at one time as it takes a time to raise the level and then bang, too much. Also, you are not going to see oil when you remove the oil fill cap. You can see the distance between the oil fill lines and the oil fill. Man, that would be a LOT of oil. Like a real lot of oil. AND fresh oil can be hard to see in the window if overfilled so be wary.
If you have everything cleaned up, go for a ride and then check to see if you see any leaks.

Got it, that helps much more on understanding on the oil level for this bike. It's not as simple as a car.
Appreciate all the info and help. I will update later on, going to go for a small ride and then check for any leaks. Then if I don't see any then I'll increase the ride a bit longer until I'm comfortable.
...Thinking of it. When I went to pick up the bike, the mechanic did put a little bit more in but I don't remember if the bike was running or if he put it in cold..
Here is a small update. Not much was coming out but there was something. It is hard to tell in the pictures so I am going to take another quick ride, only down the street to see if I get any clean oil come out. When I got home to check it out it seems to have mixed around underneath and made it difficult to see where it was coming from, just grabbed around the hoses that are in that area.
At last resort you could put some dye in the oil , it would be easier to see where the oil comes from.
we used to use aerosol foot spray that dried white to diagnose small leaks. Spray the suspected area and check it for clumping.
This is from where is dripping...origin of the leak might be at different location sometimes...
Took another quick ride and have another picture. Oil level still seems fine as it doesn't seem to be leaking too much at the moment.
Unfortunately, not as obvious as I thought it would be. I will try to take a little bit more off tomorrow to get a better shot. Would it be advisable to take off the shift linkage to take off that cover to open up more space?
