I too noticed unusual amount of wear to rear pads. looking at Ferret's photos may explain it though. the rear pad looks like organic pad material compared to front looks like sintered material. for street riding I use both brakes. it cuts stopping distance drastically. there are videos on youtube you can watch that prove it.
to the person that said they trail brake with the rear brake... please be careful. highsides are most painful!
This old thread revived, because I seem to have the same questions others have had before.
The answers above in this thread seem to indicate that new front pads may look almost like used front pads (even after 5000 or 10000 miles, and unlike automotive), in other words new pads are not very thick, and wear is very slow.
One of you measured the grooves (wear indicators) on new front pads as little as 4/32 inches (or 3 mm) deep.
Conclusion: if you look at your pads and little life seems left (above the wear indicators), do not worry and change them too rapidly. They may just be fine for another few thousand miles. Is this correct / confirmed ?
Would anyone have new (or almost) new pads, and if so could you take the holding pins out and shoot a photo ? There were photos early in the thread, by ferret, but they seem no longer be linked.
I swapped out my front pads a few days ago after 17k miles on them. I wasn't a fan of the lackluster initial bite and found a set of EBC HH pads on Ebay for $25 for a set of 4.
After 17k miles, they were in amazing shape.... between 3.3-3.5mm of life left on them. This measurement is the entire pad thickness, nothing to do with the lines in between the pad. For reference, stock EBC HH pads were 3.94-3.96mm.

Thanks for the photo, sparky. What I had in mind was a photo which shows the pads from the rear (or the side), letting one to see the thickness, or even better the calipers from the rear with the pads still inserted but the clamp removed. This would allow me to see it all in perspective ...
