Full Version: Question re: 2017EX spoke rims tubeless conversion

With our intro out of the way, it's time to start asking questions. We'll be asking more than offering advice for a while, as we're only just beginning to familiarize ourselves with the CB1100's. That being the case, we're delving into the possible purchase, from a friend, of his 2017EX he bought new. It has only 600 mi. showing, has been stored indoors, & run periodically to keep the cobwebs out. He's a vintage bike enthusiast with many other bikes, and is a trusted seller.

We're reluctant to make sort of a 'backward' move to a bike with tubes. The research we've done here indicates a swap to cast wheels onto a '17 CB1100EX from other CB1100's is not as simple as one might think.

We're considering the OUTEX spoke tubeless conversion:

Our main question is: do the CB1100 spoke rims have the bead retention rib that tubeless wheels have, that keep the bead in place in the event of low / no pressure from a leak or puncture? A pic of the bead seating area of a CB1100 spoke rim would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all.

The rims definitely have lock beads on them. One of the other reasons I changed from wire spoke rims to cast rims was that after nly 2500 miles, the little flecks of brake pad dust had begun to etch into the spoke surface. They became very hard to keep clean, especially the inside of the front ones near the hub and behind the discs, even with a brush.
Used Outex on Africa Twin front rim that has no safety bead. Well over ten thousand clicks since and riding temperatures from -20C to 40C, and single days of over 1000 clicks. Other days with heavy switchback maneuvers. No issues. No leaks.
Hello.

I have 2015 CB 1100 EX with spoked wheels. I used the OUTEX tubeless kit on my tubeless conversion in May this year. I did around 2000 miles since .... No leaks and no problems.
It is true that the edge of the rims with spokes does not have the same inner contour for seating the tubeless tire as cast wheels, but I haven't noticed any problems or pressure drops in my tires since the tubelss conversion.

All the best
Forum member Alain Lee has put a ton of mileage on his spoked CB1100 with Outex conversion kit.
^^ +1 ^^
