As soon as you have a mechanical needle displaying the RPM it becomes analog. The tiny motor rotating the needle very well may be fed a digital signal, but unless the Tach has been calibrated, you have no idea how accurate the needle readout may be.

Even 'digital' LCD or LED Tachs need to be calibrated to verify accuracy. The term "digital" may imply accuracy, but it does not guaranty it Wink

That's very wrong. The DISPLAY is analog. That says nothing of the way the display gets its data. It's a digital tachometer (and speedometer) as there is no mechanical cable from the engine/wheel/driveshaft to the instruments, driving the gauge via actual revolutions. An electrical impulse is transmitted to the tach and speedo heads, that they then interpret into servo motor movements (also digital) that swing the needles above the gauge surface.

Other than the actual gauge face itself, no part of the gauge package or senders are analog.


That being said, I use 5th gear as much as possible. I usually shift into it at about 45mph. If I had a sixth, I'd probably shift into it at about 50, and I do on my other bike.

I had a professor who was very fast to point out that accuracy and precision are two different things. A thermometer could read out to .0000, but if it was only accurate to +/- .1 who cares.

I don't think the spinning dial indicators is a calibration as much as it is setting the initial location. The indicators are very light to move, and can get bumped off of 0 while not running, this just gives them a known location.
