Actually, since the CB1100 was designed to look like an 70's bike, it's probably the other way around. The CBX looks "modern" because the CB1100 looks "old."

Look at the similarities between the cb1100 and cbx... the wheels, disk brakes, forks, tank shape.. . would it be fair to say that the cbx is the cb1100's closest relative? or perhaps the cb400?

In the styling dept., I have to say that when I got my first look at the CB1100, I was seeing a lot of CBX influence. Mostly it was the squared off tank shape and the different colored, triangular side panels. It was also helped that Honda chose Candy Glory Red as the color, which was also available on the original CBX.

Papa wheelie I sold the last one I restored. Now I got a 83 CB1100f that I might restore. Honda made it for one year only

There certainly looks to be a lot of CBX influence in the CB1100, though I'm happy its tail is more reminiscent of the early CB750s rather than the boat tail of the late 70s-early 80s CBs.

Same here. The "boat tail" has a dated look, as do rectangular headlights and instrument clusters. It is interesting the design queues of our bikes being vintage, or classic, but to me they are not "dated". Very much what comes to mind with the word timeless.
I like the tail on that CBX. I'm not unhappy with the classic chrome fender on my '13 by any means, but I wouldn't have minded if Honda had put something similar on our bikes.

It's interesting; the '70's Harley "Boat Tail" FX Superglides were hated by all when they were new. Buyers would chop the fiberglass off and bin it. Today they're one of the most sought-after collector items and a boat-tail with the original bodywork will sell for 2-3 times as much as another FX series from the same era. Are they worth more simply because they're rare?

I got into motorcycles in the 70s, so the tail appeals to me as well. As I recall, the KZ900 pioneered the look in '73 and it became a popular look for UJMs in general.

My second bike, a '79 KZ750, had a tail. I mounted an 8-track tape player in it Big Grin

Same bike as Jay Leno! In 82 honda made the same bike in white with blue stripes not many was made. That was the end of the cbx bikes. The 79 & 80 models are the best ones with the 79 being the best with hotter cams than the 80 models There was more 79 built than any other year! But the 79 still brings the most money being the first year and the hotter cams! The tank lines do favor the CB1100 more than the honda CB750k. The 2013 CB1100 is the same color as the 79 cbx candy glory red. 79 has red or silver. 80 models were red or black. 81grey color 82 white There was a few cbx sandcast bikes built but very very few!

Mate, you are a mine of information. I took a glance at one on a Sydney dealers floor the other week. Must go back and have a closer look.

Cheers
Pterodactyl let me know when you go look & let me know the year etc. The I6 is a great motor. There is no other bike that has the sound of a cbx! It's for sure honda most collected bike! The price goes up every year and parts are high but there are guys that have any part that you need in the USA and in Aussie and in the UK.
Flynrider that's a nice looking KZ900. They was and still are very nice bikes also. I like the tails on the bikes also! The 79 cbx has a tail & the 80 model had a tail with a lid that would open has little storage area!
