If you 'ride', the use of 50W-90 snake oil is mandated. If you 'drive', anything goes.
I ride against the wind....Biker
Still at it?

Here's the final word. And to correct a century of misuse.

You "drive" animals. That's what a "drover" is - he gets behind the cows and yells and smacks their butts, make them head into the barn for the night.

You "operate" a car or truck. Or jet plane or locomotive.

You could be said to be the "operator" of a bicycle or motorcycle, also - but since the visual model is that of being on a horse or mule, you could be said to be "riding" it.
I agree with you, JPT. An "operator" is in control of something, no matter if you're on it, (motorcycle) in it, (car, bus, truck) or next to it (machine operator). Which is why motor vehicle laws have replaced "driver" with "operator" or "operation of a motor vehicle". Since you can be charged with a DUI without even driving, as when when you are sitting in a car with the engine off, but the keys in the ignition or even in your pocket. You have control over the vehicle.

Add a cup of hog fat for ultimate lubrication. It's a southern staple.
