Three weeks in I just rolled the odometer to 625 miles last night. I took a 2 hour ride that was about as pleasent as I could ask for. I am taking care of the first service myself, Hondas 10w30 and filter check, lube, wipe the chain sit down and talk nice to her. That's about it; which is ANOTHER reason I like this motorcycle!
I think though after another 800-1000 miles I will consider the motor nicely honed and lapped and valves seated and then it will be time for synthetic oil forever.
Think that's enough break-in?
Engine machining practices have changed a bunch over the years. The bike is pretty much as broken in as it ever will be within the first few minutes of running. A lot of guys, myself included, switched to synthetic oil on first change with no ill effects. I did observe a rattle when I used a non-Honda oil but that's another story for another day. I'm running HP4S with no issues now.

No kidding, even though Honda worked very hard to capture the vintage vibe of past CBs with the CB1100, the actual manufacturing of the bike is anything but retro.
how to section very cool, I need a how to section.
I changed the oil and filter, re-filled precisely and went for a ride. A few minutes in I began to feel a warm moist feeling in my right sneaker. Strange...OH, CRAAAAP I left the oil filler cap off! limped back home without losing enough oil for the light to come on and discovered that I had left it on the transmission and it had fallen somewhere along the way....perfect...The slightly weird good news is that the plug from my little Honda engine on my pressure washer fits, looks crappy but fits. The dealer is ordering a new one, maybe I should spring for a racing cap with lease attached.

Sorry to hear that. I guess it goes without saying to check your oil level before you ride it again. How far down the road did you make it before you noticed the warm sneaker? How much oil do you think splashed out?
I changed the oil on my CJ360T in Minneapolis once (on the way home from the Black Hills. Scooted over to the Mall to visit a pipe shop and realized I had left my Buck knife (used to poke holes in the oil can - remember oil cans?). It was laying on the engine case behind the cylinders where I left it. Lucky me!
Loosing the cap is a bummer though.

It was a complete cluster. I got back put some oil in, couldn't see a level, put more in then realized I couldn't see a level because it was so over full there WAS NO LEVEL, had the fun of draining oil without draining all the oil and finally getting a correct level. I figure abour 1/2 a quart on my shoe in all. 3 quarts wasted figuring it out. Live and learn could have been so much worse.
I live in an extremely small town. People have been asking me why they saw me walking up and down the road like I was looking for something. Hmm... let me think... would that be the small black plastic thing that fell off somewhere on the 3mile loop?
