So yesterday I decided to get my one allocated bike drop out of the way. I was leaving my carport and the dirt/gravel driveway combo took the bike right out from under me. Buggered up the left crankcase cover pretty good and I decided to go ahead and buy a replacement now even if I don't install it. Coming from the vintage Honda world, I know that once a part is dropped from production, NOS or nice used parts can get hella-expensive. I'm looking at the hondapartshouse fiche and they have the metal cover for $94.63 (not bad, considering), but then I notice that the plastic sprocket cover is $136.89. In what universe does it make sense that a piece of plastic would cost $40 more than a comparably-sized metal part? I guess I just don't understand
I'm sorry about your drop. Check Partzilla -- their price might be better.
I think Honda parts are cheap by comparison to BMW parts!
Samurider sells sprocket covers as well, in metal, to replace the plastic, if I recall. Sorry about the drop.

some guys have replaced the plastic cover with metal ones so they may have their old ones laying around you can pick up at a substantial discount. CB4ME and Chip Beck come to mind.
Thanks, my plastic cover is just fine though. It's the metal crankcase cover that took the fall. I only mentioned the sprocket cover because I don't understand why it is more expensive than the metal crankcase cover which I assume is more complex/expensive to manufacture.

You get the added benefit of no cost conversion from 5 speed to 6 speed transmission, says so right on the metal cover.
The tooling for those covers (both cast aluminum and injection molded plastic) are both expensive. The material cost is pennies while the tooling is $50,000 or more. The price of the part is determined more by how many parts you run at a time than what the material it is made out of.
My guess on those two covers is that Honda has a larger minimum order on the aluminum cover that brings the price down a little.
